Retread PHOTOS: NYC Subway Vanishing Railfan Windows |

Posted by Jersey Mike on Sun Jul 28 14:34:49 2013 Due to some technical issues I was unable to post the first set of photos from my Southwest Chief trip. However while re-posting old photo sets on my Rail Adventure Blog I came across a set from 2008 in which I managed to have quite a bit of run riding around on all the various R's 32 through 42 before the NYCTA decided to ruin things with the R160. Seeing as how I didn't think the original post made the best use of the material I made some improvements and you can check it out again for the first time.Having many painful regrets about when the redbirds vanished, over the past year I have done my utmost to document the various railfan window enabled lines on the NYCS before they vanish forever able become useless. Here is one of my first major trips to the city I took in June 2008 when I still had someone to stay with living within city limits. My targets were such endangered species as the Brighton Beach Line, the South Ferry Loop and VALLEY interlocking. There's going to be a lot of pictures here so hold onto your hats. The Brighton Line pics as well as all of the other stuff I took on the NYCS, LIRR and Amtrak that weekend can be located at: http://acm.jhu.edu/~sthurmovik/Railpics/08-05-25_NYCS_VANISHING_RFW/-Thumbnails.html I'll post up some of the VALLEY interlocking pics in a later post. On the early morning Amtrak train to NYC I caught a freight train on the Trenton Line at SHORE interlocking with its Once there I encountered an inbound Slant B in the below grade portion of the line. Here are a few videos from the trip down the Brighton starting off with a B train passing through DeKalb interlocking eastbound from the Manny B. B at Kings Highway interlocking eastbound. The rad flags were for a GO closing the local track between here and Brighton Beach. Coney bound R40M B trainset passing a local train of R68's on the Q. Wonderful early summer foliage on the Brighton. Ok, moving on there were lots of mixed R32/38 sets on the A, not the rust differential! I actually stayed overnight in the city with a friend and the next morning caught an NJT local to Metropark to catch a ride from another friend. APL-46 #4610 was providing the power that day. |

As for the "approach medium" N/O BBC, subway interlocking signals are nothing like class 1 RR signals which are primarily speed signals. NYCTA interlocking signals are route signals. The top portion indicates the condition of the road ahead and the bottom portion indicates the route to be taken: green for the main route and yellow for the diverging route. The signal N/O BBc indicates to proceed with caution on the main route (A3 Tk) into BBC station. In the case of a train immediately ahead both top and bottom show red. The IRT signals used to be closer to standard RR signals in the the top portion indicated the main route and the bottom portion indicated the diverging route. The last place on the IRT with the old style signals was, and may still be, the area around E 180 and the Dyre Line although since I haven't been up there in a while, those signals may by now have been replaced by the new signals. |

I actually think that the NYCTA's signal system is quite logical and efficient especially since it was developed by the BMT orpossibly even the BRT before that. |

It's mostly fine, but G/Y is kind of a no no. The only time G should appear in the upper head is for a maximum speed straight ahead move. I just like making fun of it. |

Actually, G/Y is not a problem since there are speed markers at switch locations that specify the speed to be taken over a switch. Absent any speed sign, the prescribed speed if a train is moving to either the right or left over a switch is 10 MPH. The reason that movement to the left or right is mentioned is that there are many curved "main routes" such as B1 tk S/O W 4 St and D2 tk N/O 9 Av on the West End. At 142 St Jct on the IRT Lenox Line, the main route is the curve to the right through the Harlem River tube and the diverging route is the physically straight route into 145 St. |

Aside from the fact that the NYCS has effectively implemented faux version of automatic train control with timers and tripstops, G/Y can result in a wrong side failure if the yellow lamp were to burn out or be obscured. Yeah route knowledge and dark signal head procedures, but why set up an unsafe situation. |

Great shots, thank you.Kudos to the car cleaners who worked on that R Slant whose interior you photographed. Considering how old that car is, it looks damn good. I love the Brighton line. It looks like a toy system that I could build with my son's Thomas the Tank Engine wooden track set. |
