It should say Broad Street, Wall Street. The train runs along Broad Street. Name the cross street. Everybody in the world knows what boro Wall Street is in.

When I was out there yesterday,there were 3 trainsets on the road and 3 at ENY yard.the 3 in the yard were signed as Z trains.

I quite frankly don't understand all the fuss about the A/C performance on the R-32s. When the cars were GOHed, didn't the MTA specify the conditions under which the cars would have to operate so that the A/C would function as intended?

According to a NYTimes article this week about the severe heat wave in the southwest, Phoenix reached 119 degrees and planes had to be grounded at the airport because the manufacturer's specs said the planes were safe to 118 degrees.

about three were on the road today that i've seen..along with a few 42s..including the one we were on..roads were JACKED UP TOADY..the subway was the very best option for traveling.

Wonder if the will ever get to mixed consists ? They could do 6 + 2 without messing up C/R positions. They did mix R32 with R38's in the latter's dying days

The A/C worked fine for years when the R32s were on the E train. A few years ago A/C problems started. I suspect the MTA cut back on maintenance when they thought they would be getting rid of the cars soon.

I worked the E just before the V train came into play and the air conditioning was horrible. Yet when we took the trains to the yard they were OK. Why? because they couldn't handle the hot stations, doors opening and closing every few minutes and the heavy crowds on the E. Once the door stayed closed for awhile and there weren't throngs of passengers inside, they cooled off nicely.

You can't compare R42's to R32's with air conditioning because it was retrofitted at GOH into the R32's whereas the R42's were built/designed with it. You had to find a place to fit all the hardware into the R32's and perhaps some components are smaller or poorly placed just to fit the stuff in. IMO a/c on the IRT Redbirds generally sucked since it was retrofitted rather than manufactured with it.

R32's have drumswitches for door operation whereas the R42's don't. These drumswitches are set up to "on" at the c/r cabs, "off" at the train operators cabs, and "thru" at all other cabs.

Therefore, you will not see R32's and R42's mixed on the road.

You're starting with an incorrect premise. The A/C units on the R-32s were not all that good on the E-line as compared to when they were newer. They are older still, now and the condensers have become less efficient with age. This causes the compressor motors to work harder and overheat. There are/were other issues that were shop specific but for all intents and purposes, your original statement that the MTA cut back maintenance was totally without merit.

Funny thing about the old cars, at least PRE-GOH ... door controls are trainline on the electric portions. We had R10's in the mix as well. Bill's right about the 42's not having drum switches, but there was door control in the cab, just wasn't a drum switch.

As far as trainline went though, it all worked anyway. Even air doors did their thing when you turned the key. We were trained back then to just deal with it. Drum switches as Bill said, and MDC on the 42's. It all set up properly. And changing sides in the middle of those monstrosities COULD get interesting. Fortunately nobody was stupid enough when knocking together cars to put triggers and caps in the middle. :)

Once they are assigned to midnights with W/T off; don't know what a holiday is; February vacation; want a weekend off and get denied because they put in the request 2 minutes late for that special family event, or couldn't get to a phone because they were on the road; walk thru a yard or on a structure in the freezing cold/snow; emergency brake activation in a tube because a signal flashed to red in your face due to Sandy damage and you have to go onto the roadbed or in between cars.......

Oh how I wish my financial situation could let me get out NOW!

Hey when I was extra extra I got bit a few times its part of the job. Some folks hear us talk talk talk and say "Nah that won't be me ill deal". Then they come down here and reality sets in. This job can do it to some folks but i still enjoy moving the trains!

Did the R38 have the same drumswitch set-up as the R32 ?
Did the R40 (slant and mod) have the same drumswitch set-up as the R42 ?

I suspect yes, as they mixed consists until their end.

There was an anecdotal report here about 8 years ago of a 6+2 R38/R40 mixed consist on the "C". How would that have been possible ?

Do you have central AC in your home ? I do. After 20 years, the compressors physically deteriorate, are more likely to fail, and take a tremendous surge of power to start, start with a bang, and more kilowatt hours to keep running.

On the R40 Slants, I think 100 had OEM AC, and 200 were retrofits.
In their post-GOH life, was there any difference in AC reliability between the 2 groups ?

I was commenting from my point of view as a passenger. I certainly didn't criticize anyone. "The MTA" is not a person. Well, it probably is given recent Supreme Court decisions.

The R38's were the last model to have drumswitches. The R1's were first.

One of the first things we were taught about the R10's (include all classes R1 to R14) was to make sure to "cap down" before changing a drum switch otherwise the doors could fly open.
