Funny thing about the old cars, at least PRE-GOH ... door controls are trainline on the electric portions. We had R10's in the mix as well. Bill's right about the 42's not having drum switches, but there was door control in the cab, just wasn't a drum switch.

As far as trainline went though, it all worked anyway. Even air doors did their thing when you turned the key. We were trained back then to just deal with it. Drum switches as Bill said, and MDC on the 42's. It all set up properly. And changing sides in the middle of those monstrosities COULD get interesting. Fortunately nobody was stupid enough when knocking together cars to put triggers and caps in the middle. :)
