The lower Bway line, meanwhile, was redesigned. it stayed under Bway to times square..then 7th ave..with the intentions of heading to upper Manhattan under Central Park West..joining another BMT line from 8th avenue...along with a branch line to Queens under 60th st. there were so many plans for the BWAY LINE..LEXINGTON LINE..and their various branches..hardly any of them came to life outside of what we have now. |

That extension would have been better had it gone all of the way to connect with the "L' train at 14Th St. and 8Th Ave.With the "L" Terminating at the Jacobs center from the South and the Seven terminating at the Center from the North. The "L' could have an ample lay-up and turn facility to speed up service. Think of the many possible terminal set-ups! |

Joe Brennan's web site has excellent information about the Bowery Station on the J/Z. The original blueprints show "future doorways" from the current east mezzanine and closed west mezzanine to the side platforms for the 3rd Av subway that was never built. Except for the "future doorways" there apparently was no construction. |

Someone must have told them the ceremonial train of SMEEs would not be able to run if the doors were in place opening day :).On a serious note, when it opens the line will be mixed R188 - R62A, so half the fleet wouldn't line up properly. The 7 is probably the only line that could get PSD cheaply. Grand Central doesn't have columns in the way, so that leaves only five underground stops to find creative solutions for. |

That's not the way I remember it from a PSC report I have from circa 1915. The Lex was going to be a part of the IRT, but the IRT withdrew from the dual contracts in protest for not getting the 4 Av subway, When the PSC decided to award the new subway Lines in the Bronx and the Lex to the BRT and started building the connection from the lower Bway Subway up Lex, the IRT reconsidered and decided it would be satisfies with the lines it was awarded in Bkln so it got back the Lex, Pelham and Jerome lines and the lower Lex subway infrastructure was backfilled. |

In the end, they didn't even cut out a station shell which would have been easily completed at a later date. Another example of people playing CYA and not looking out for the transit riders of the New York Metropolitan area. Even if it comes from different sources, how can the lack of a station at 10th Avenue and 41st Street and extensions in Queens be less critical than spending over half a billion dollars to try and fix the new South Ferry station? |

Because the feds didn't provide money to build the 7 train extension. South Ferry was constructed with funds explicitly earmarked for Lower Manhattan as 9/11 relief funds. Ditto the Sandy relief funds. In both cases the money couldn't be spent elsewhere in the city. I'd argue there were other projects in Lower Manhattan more deserving of the money (constructing Phase IV of the SAS with a Shallow Chrystie being a good example), but what's done is done. The 7 train extension was built by the city with tax increment funding. Essentially the city floated a few bonds on the expected increase in tax revenue from the redevelopment of the west side in part due to the extension of the 7 train into the area. I don't know for certain, but I believe it was the changing in those redevelopment plans and the economic downturn which has reduced the expected increase in revenue and brought about a slight reduction in the project scope. |

The killer time wise is the station building, because they are not building IRT style simple stations, rather the IND monstrosities. They are lovely, but who cares. We need a staircase down from the street, to the platform. Probably an elevator, but simpler is better. The TBM's seem to be the 'easy' part. Ya, big launch box, and muck houses and support structures, but they basically just go, and get the job done much faster than the stations are built. I forget, did the 7 tube go over, or under the Lincoln Tunnel tubes? |

Timers downgrade from Times Square to the new station. Standard 20 MPH switches, most likely subject to GT-20s. I would imagine trains can enter straight-in at full speed much like Jamaica Center, as long as no trains are stored beyond the station. However, with the additional interlocking south of the station, the signal protective distance may be great enough to still allow the train to enter at full speed. |

Speaking of entering Jamaica Center, do you know why the Jamaica-bound J's entering Sutphin Blvd must encounter that incredibly restrictive timer right outside the station? Whatever the speed sign shows (20 or 25) the trains must almost come to a complete stop before the signal (lunar white) clears, even though the station is empty. The E's on the upper level don't have a similar restriction, and they're entering from much more of a curve than the J's. |

Unixtime is a 32 bit int (sometimes signed, sometimes not) that counts the seconds since Jan 1, 1970. This runs out of 2 billion seconds (signed int version) in 2037. If you use it unsigned (then no dates before 1970) it runs out in 2109.Filetime is a 64 bit int that Windows is using (not everywhere but most places) that counts 100 nanosecond intervals since Jan 1, 1601. It is signed, so it can go backwards as well. But a 64 bit int is so big, this runs out hugely in the future. |

But what is being built at W25th Street- almost 10 blocks from the passenger entrances? If they're building a 10-block long layup track, maybe someday we could get further expansion... |
