Some CBTC equipped R160s operate on the J, since the L, officially, needs 48 cars to make service. Since the nummber of CBTC cars available will decrease, there won't be extras available to make J service. So they're bringing 32s over to cover the J.

Half had brake and HVAC problems.

So they over-scrapped by about 70 cars, getting down to about 226. But that was done not knowing ENY would have to take over the V train.

Nonetheless, the TA got obsessive compulsive about scrapping rather than mothballing for unforeseen circumstances (again). Those 70 cars could have put the R42 out of their misery a couple of years ago.

Maybe they want to eventually swap the C's R32's with the J/Z's R160's. This would solve the air conditioning problems on the R32's on the C while, since the R32's on the J/Z would be running mostly above ground, they (hopefully) wouldn't have the same problems on that line. Both lines have about the same car requirements.

The problem with doing that is normally, the C runs between 168 St and Euclid whenever it runs with no change in terminals or class of service and consequently no sign changing. The J OTOH has the alternate Z service with certain AM rush hour drop outs at Bway Jct which unlike the C require variations in signage which the R-160s can handle easily especially if either a J or Z have to be swapped at the terminal for any reason or a Bway Jct dropout has to be swapped with a through train due to some sort of a problem on the road.

Most of the AM rush hour drop outs at Bway Junction are already run with R42s, and the crew doesn't change the signs. The introduction of R32s wouldn't make much of a difference.

The R32's have crappy Z route signs on the side. There is simply a centered brown Z, no "Jamaica/Nassau St" description, though that is all you get with an R42.

I think one R42 Z becomes a J after AM rush once back in Jamaica. In any case, they stash one east of Parsons during the day, and it comes out at 330pm.

I railfanned the J/Z during both AM and PM rush hours on both June 10th and June 17th, and here's what I saw:

Around 3 sets of R42s are signed up as Z trains, and return north to terminate at Broadway Junction.
Around 3 sets of R42s come south signed up as J trains. Usually two are layed up, one at Parsons, one at 111th. The third set may be layed up at ENY, or sometimes will run all day.

With the R160 SMS going on, there is one, sometimes two sets of R42s running all day now.
