Wasn't there also a time when they were trying to get at least some 8th Ave lines to serve the Brighton, and some 6th Ave lines to serve Ozone Park and the Rockaways? If you have all locals, without exception, that serve West 4th St, "flip" and change mainlines, I believe there are no switching conflicts and so this idea was born whenever it was. |

I started working the schedule office in 1976 and I remember seeing that map although I don't know the exact date of its first publication. What I did notice is that it seemed that the TA wanted to do away with numbers entirely and have all lines, including the IRT, lettered. |

MTA PLAN FOR ACTION routes..I think it's a fleshing out/refinement of the 1968 Program for Action (with the addition of stations, for one), but there are several notable differences: - The 1970 plan doesn't have the Pelham extension to Co-Op City. - No extension of the Concourse line. - No Queens Boulevard super-express. - Flatlands Avenue gets a branch off the Canarsie line instead of the Livonia. - Canarise line is extended to Flatbush & Nostrand. - Utica Avenue subway appears. The Nostrand Avenue IRT is routed to Nostrand & Avenue W instead of Kings Plaza via Flatbush Avenue. - The Avenue C connector is added. |

Queens Blvd local from 71st Street, 60th Street tunnel, Broadway express, Manhattan Bridge, skips DeKalb rush hours, Fourth Avenue express, West End local to Coney Island. |

Also, if you notice, the SAS was to have been connected to both the Dyre Av Line and the Wh Pl Rd Line N/O E180. Original SAS plans did call for the line to reclaim the Pelham Line but as I mentioned in several posts on the SAS, that plan was changed. It's too bad that the IRT wasn't extended to Kings Plaza. If it had been I might have kept my house and still be living there instead of moving to more subway friendly Bay Ridge. |

D as in west end? don't you mean D as in brighton? No; BusRider was using the current convention of D as West End to describe the map. and why would the D run down the broadway line? the D is a 6th avenue route. It's H on the actual plan. The B takes care of Brighton, and only the B and F run on Sixth Avenue. D is assigned to the West Side IRT. |

That proposal totally destroyed the traditional lettered BMT/IND route combinations by lettering the numbered IRT routes. I have a photo of an R-1 mockup likely made circa 1930 which showed a number in the route sign box . It seems that prior to the adoption of the single/double letter route system, it was intended that the IND continue the BMT's route naming system that was established circa 1923. Considering the large number of routes on the combined BMT/IND Division it would have been more logical to use numbers for the BMT/IND routes since those route would eventually see greater expansion and use letters for the IRT. either that or just use route numbers for everything since there is a limited number of letters but numbers are virtually limitless. |

It looks similar but no, the destinations are different for some lines and the Third Ave El is shown. The Third Avenue El is on mine, too, but rebuilt with fewer stations, extended north to "Woodlawn," and through routed to New Lots and Kings Plaza via the Lex ("U") instead of the Dyre Avenue line. I think mine is a "phase two;" the one in the auction has a lot fewer extensions and no Second Avenue subway. |

Not exactly..They planned on operating two services on each..the A local/A express..B local B express. to replace AA/CC trains. On the Brighton..same thing applied..the B local served as the Brighton 6th ave local from Concourse...while the 207th st train operated as the express along Central pk west 6th ave and the Brighton line. Same for the A..Concourse service was the 8th avenue local..Washington Hts the 8th avenue express.. The Fulton local made little sense..but you can understand why such a route was created like the old HH shuttle..[A 8th ave local trains would continue in Brooklyn as the Fulton express..The new M service would make all local stops.] |
