Could there be Amtrak reroutes due to CT derailment?

I realize the typical practice has been to simply suspend service, but is there any chance they might run some additional ALB-BOS service to try and connect NYC to Springfield and Boston, if this is a prolonged outage?

The alternatives (bus) are going to be maxed out for the duration of the outage, offering a rail route (even if it takes 3 extra hours) may be desirable. Especially since there might be a few extra hours of traffic on I95 depending on time of day anyway.

Well duh... some P40s would have to do.

I'm sure one can be scrounged up for a 3 car shuttle to meet Empire Corridor trains. The LSL and the shuttle would be enough to provide a variety of options... if the LSL starts selling out add another shuttle.

Stick extra coaches on 448/449 between ALB & BOS is all they could do, and unlikely they will.

Not gonna happen though. For now, LSL is still running on the B&A main, but there's no more slots since CSX is now moving the coastal freights through there.

That they COULD do unless CSX makes them ABD that too. Bridge at Selkirk is SRO on both tracks.

Who reimburses Amtrak for the added costs per passenger?

Cheaper for them to strand the public.

As it is MNCRR is stranding passengers since there is no bustitution between South Norwalk & New Haven.

Another route they could take (although I doubt the Housatonic is suitable for passenger operations) would be to take the Danbury branch north from S Norwalk, around the balloon track at the old Danbury station, then head east along the Housatonic RR (the old Maybrook line) to Derby, then south along the Waterbury branch to Devon where they would rejoin the NEC. They would need diesels only between Norwalk and Devon. It would be a railfan's dream but highly unlikely.

You're missing two other alternatives - air and automobile (either personal or rental car).

The track between Derby and Danbury is probably about as bad as you can get and still be usable.

My mention of traffic on I95 was to preclude automobiles. It's not just intercity traffic, without MNRR there will be more commuter traffic causing delays.
