I would not know that, but from what I remember reading, that station can platform full 10-car trains using the (since bricked up, but that could be undone) arched openings for the center doors. As long as it could be made ADA accessable, it may very be the easiest solution, especially if you can make it so the (1) can use the inner loop if necessary.

At this point, it may be what the cheapest option is that is what gets rebuilt.

At this point the cheapest option is to keep both South Ferry stations closed to the public, to wait for federal money to fix up the stations and what was damaged, to not bother with shuttle buses or other efforts to "restore some service"

The cheapest thing to do, at this point, is just to let folks coming to/from the ferries who NEED the #1 train to walk to and from the Rector Street station using the south-most end of the station.

So any grand talk or fanatasy plans are simply out of the question - because all will cost money. The MTA IS doing the cheapest thing possible right now, on one level.

That said, I do think now that we know the old SF station won't re-open for possibly three years that some politicians, especially with the weather this week will soon start demanding the MTA re-open the old SF station quickly just so people don't have to walk from the Ferry to BG, Whitehall or Rector.

The idea of re-opening old SF here is NOT a foamer situation, it's to make it so people at the Ferry Terminal don't have to walk to the other stations, especially Rector for those needing the (1) specifically.

More trouble than it's worth. If anything there is a better chance of the outer loop being put back in service than the inner loop. The inner has been out of service since 1977 and would require a lot more work to be useable.

As much as some folks want to talk about using the inner loop at South Ferry for #1 trains, they have completely forgotten that the #5 train uses the inner loop fairly often fairly regularly for the past couple of decades to return uptown from/to the Bowling Green station.

As detailed drawings of the South Ferry tunnels for the new but now flooded terminal show the inner loop track wall openings do not line up with the outer loop platforms or the switches - meaning that it's going to take some major work to switch trains between the tracks.

Needless to say, but I will - there's no station opening for the public, but only a MTA staff exit to the street near Battery Park. At least the outer loop had a station opening/exit inside the new ferry terminal, and at one time - token booth, turn-styles, etc. The inner loop platforms have for a long time been turned over to MTA staff usage, with the wall openings bricked over decades ago.

Any of this kind of stuff means spending money, whereas right now the MTA is doing the cheapest thing possible, with the last stop for the #1 at Rector Street.

Mike

125th Street should happen. Remember, a considerable portion of that tunnel was built in the 1970s.

What could wind up happening there is the last part of Phase 2 is done as elevated coming out of a portal near the end of the existing tunnel portion (around 120th Street or so) with an elevated terminal at 125th Street/Lexington Avenue (since that would be cheaper) and provisions for two things:

1. An eventual extension all the way across 125th Street to 12th Avenue (which I think could happen anyway with Columbia University's massive expansion).

2. A future extension to the Bronx via a rebuild of the Bronx portion of the old 3rd Avenue El that itself could include provisions for a future rebuild of the Manhattan portion of that line.

Any elevated portions would likely be built both for cutting WAY down on noise and to better withstand Sandy-like storms.

The MTA with the building and opening of the new South Ferry terminal, defined the old South Ferry loop station as dangerous and obsolete, so it is going to be difficult for a court to order the MTA to re-open a dangerous station. If the gap fillers are not working or the signals are damaged then the MTA is not going to take the time or effort or money to repair them, let alone to restore the upper level turnstyles and electronic equipment. Much of the electronic equipment within the South Ferry station has been damaged.

Wally,

Like it or not, the idea of replacing a cramped, short loop station with a larger, full length modern station was the correct choice.

It made sense for operations.
It made sense for safety.
It made sense for the majority of riders.

While there may have been some poor engineering choices, the concept itself was the right choice.

Please stop flogging this horse.

As envisioned in the 1970s, the SAS in the Bronx was supposed to be connected to the Dyre Av Line near the original NYW&B terminal in Mott Haven. Unfortunately, although the city and later the MTA owned that entire ROW, portions of it S/O E180 have been demolished and would have to be rebuilt should by some miracle the SAS should ever find its way across the Harlem River. Additionally all,of the original SAS plans called for a takeover of the IRT Pelham Line by the SAS since it like the Jerome and Wh Pl Rd lines were built to dual contract standards and can accommodate IND/BMT sized cars by simply shaving back the station platforms as was done with the Astoria Line. Although it was not widely publicized, sometime in the 1970s, a modification was made that left the Pelham Line with the IRT and instead involved the takeover of the Wh Pl Rd Line as a branch of the SAS.. Needless to say that none of the Bronx plans for the SAS will ever come to fruition at least not in the lifetimes of most of us. Depending on the demographics, I tend to agree that the SAS as a panacea for relieving Lex Av overcrowding is highly overrated since the bulk of IRT east side passengers come from the Bronx so a SAS that doesn't address that issue will, probably be of less use than anticipated.

Unfortunately, the way the 63 St line was designed, a SAS service via 6 Av would require trains to use the Xover S/O Lex Av station. I addition, what service would you remove from the upper west side to provide a 6 Av/2 Av service?

I agree that the lcl tks should be connected to 63 St N/O 57/7 but the so called MTA planners did not see fit to do it.

Ronan and the MTA didn't take over the NYCTA until 1968, several months after Chrystie St. opened. Other than that, you are right about the R.

hmm..i tend to disagree with you since Airtrain looms over the Van Wyck..and the fact that a elevated line wont suffer the same effects a underground line would in heavy storms like Sandy.
