Another Love Affair: Chicago's CTA

Man, I wanna thank everyone for so much love you've shown to Chicago's CTA. As a retired motorman, current charter director, and announcer on the Holiday Train, I'll take advantage of special access to try and keep the Love flowing.

A NB Green line train of 2400s roars out of the sound deadening tube on the IIT campus at 32nd St.

6/8's of a grand union, from the head car, we're lined up to make a Pink line move to the left; straight ahead would be a Purple move, Orange move to the right. The inbound track to the left is Brown line straight, Brown or Green reloop the Loop from the right because of stuck drawbridget; and Green terminating on Loop from the left.

When the Chicago White Sox won the Worlds Series in 2005, a pair of 2600's were wrapped in honor of the team. The wrapped cars are on a charter at Linden Ave, Wilmette, IL, Purple line.

A two-car 2400 series charter on the tail track west of Ashland/63rd Green line. This paint scheme is no-more. Note that the interlocking signal can display all indications with only four lenses: red over red, yellow over red, red over yellow, call on-red over red over lunar.

The photo of the train on the Lake Street bridge is spectacular. I am convinced that the downtown Loop "L" will exist as long as there is a Chicago.

I certainly hope you're right there. George. Chi didn't always seem to be going in that direction. Two subways left only two full time lines on the Loop plus Evanston Express. But things have been coming back nicely. Who would have through a century ago that there would be no rail transit on the Brooklyn Bridge?

"Is it possible for a train to enter the loop, and stay in it?"

Yes, if the power is shut off, the train will stay in the Loop until the power comes back on. Seriously, a train could circle the Loop on either track indefinitely. In fact, when the Dan Ryan line opened in 1969, the Loop was reconfigured. Dan Ryan was through routed with Lake Street and operated only on Lake and Wabash. Only Ravenswood and Evanston circled the Loop; Ravenswood on the outer loop counter-clockwise, and Evanston Express, weekday rush hours only, on the inner loop, clockwise. A new service, named "Loop Shuttle", circled the inner loop daytime hours (except Sunday), enabling convenient transfers to and from Lake-Dan Ryan trains. The Loop Shuttle was eventually discontinued. The Orange and Pink lines now fill that function.

When a bridge is stuck, either Lake or Wells, it is not unknown to keep things moving by having trains circle the Loop until the issue is resolved.

Thanks George. This shot is best on June 21 during the summer solstice when the sun is north of the east-west axis to light up the north side of the train. You've got a good two months on either side of that date to have the sun high enough. Next year mayby I'll try a shot in the morning.

The CTA is halfway through the second rehab project renewing signals, track, structure on the Wells and Van Buren legs of the Loop. The Wabash and Lake St. sides were done two years ago. So yes, it looks like the Loop is here to stay. A new station is under preliminary engineering. The station will replace Madison /Wabash and Randolph /Wabash. Out in the boonies away from downtown....Red line work at both ends will depend largely on the outcome of the November elections. Vote Republican....nothing will get done. Vote Democratic and Chicago should reap some rewards.

Yes, at both junctions there are two turning paths thaty connect the outer loop to the outer loop and the inner loop to the inner loop. At Tower 12 the Brown uses the outside turn in regular service, the Pink and Purple use the inner turn. At Tower 18, the Orange uses the inside turn.

And in the 1920's the North Shore Line's outbound Eastern Limited, starting at Dorchester on the Jackson Park Branch, made one and a half circuits of the Loop, so as to receive Milwaukee-bound connecting passengers from New York Central at LaSalle Street Station. The Eastern Limited would have traversed the Wabash and Lake legs of the Loop twice.

One of the first things I will do when Sears finally delivers my time machine is go back to 1925 or so and book a parlor seat in the observation car of one of the North Shore limiteds, preferably while these were still running over the Shore Line Route (which I never got a chance to ride)!

Only problem is the Sears of today is not the Sears we grew up with. If some part of the current Sears/K-Mart carried a time machine, I'll buy one too and keep National City Lines from getting control of the Baltimore Transit Company in 1945 so streetcars would still be serving the area.
