Would love to see that, but I guess seeing the classic white-on-black "76" tiles on the wall would be too much to ask.Imagine if someone did actually get in there and snap some pictures. It'd be like Indiana Jones entering the chamber of the Holy Grail. |

I'm betting that photos do exist if there is a station of some kind behind that wall, usually photos are taken of construction sites sometimes by insurance companies, I knew an insurance man who did take photographs of transit projects for several transit systems as that was required by law in the past but I don't know if and when they stopped doing it, but I did see photos he took of several job sites being done by the New York transit system from the 30's to the 60's. Posted by Broadway Lion on Thu Aug 9 21:49:34 2012, in response to Re: 76 TH STATION BROOKLYN/QUEENS., posted by the moose on Thu Aug 9 19:42:31 2012. LION has carefully surveyed the surface of Ptiken from Euclid to 76th Street. There is no surface evidence whatsoever of any subway once the street enters Queens. No, not even a manhole on Pitkin which could access a tunnel. zipzeronaddaThere are plenty of subway grates on the Brooklyn side of the City Lion, but none on the Queens side. But then we KNOW about the Brooklyn Side of the tunnel. From in the tunnel, from the pictures that I have seen, it does look like the tracks pass under the wall, but that is all that the LION can say about it. I propose that we all join the Transit Museum, and then propose an guided expedition to 76th Street. We could use flat cars (fitted for pax use) to get to the wall but beyond a guide telling us what we are looking at, there will be little else to be seen. Still, I would pay to go on such a trip. In 1983, there was a manhole cover in the middle of Pitkin Av east of where the bulkhead would be, however when I went there again a few years ago, the street had been completely repaved and the manhole clover was gone. The words "Independent System City of New York" were cast into that manhole cover. That same year I was examining the book of emergency exits in the trainmaster's office and there were 2 emergency exits listed in the book that would have been beyond the bulkhead but when George Abere and I investigated, we couldn't find any trace of them. Unfortunately when the Gunn/Kiley administration took over the MTA, Dave Feeley's staff came through all the Jay St offices like a bull in a china shop and trashes all documents he deemed out of date and that book went into the dumpster and the new book no longer contained those emergency exit numbers. From the time that George and I first investigated the area in 1962 (unfortunately in the evening when it was dark and we couldn't see much), later in 1983 and up to the present. extensive street and sidewalk repaving and construction has taken place in the area completely obliterating any possible evidence of proposed station entrances or emergency exits. |

Since you have mentioned that the tunnel infrastructure extends to 79 St, does that mean that the tunnel curves slightly south at the S/E of the station shell since that's what Pitkin Av does. If the tunnel does not curve that would put the end of the subway infrastructure at 78 St rather than 79 St. |

According to the tunnel rat, the subway infrastructure ends at 79 St (although I suspect it may be 78 St). If the station shell were constructed similarly to the rest of the Pitkin Av stations, that would place it centered on 76 St and the cemetery doesn't start till 80 St thus there would be nothing to do with any station entrances under any mausoleums at all. |

That may very well have been the case, especially since even if the existence of the station were to be proven, there is no likelihood of it ever being used for any transit uses anyhow. |
