In 1983, there was a manhole cover in the middle of Pitkin Av east of where the bulkhead would be, however when I went there again a few years ago, the street had been completely repaved and the manhole clover was gone. The words "Independent System City of New York" were cast into that manhole cover. That same year I was examining the book of emergency exits in the trainmaster's office and there were 2 emergency exits listed in the book that would have been beyond the bulkhead but when George Abere and I investigated, we couldn't find any trace of them. Unfortunately when the Gunn/Kiley administration took over the MTA, Dave Feeley's staff came through all the Jay St offices like a bull in a china shop and trashes all documents he deemed out of date and that book went into the dumpster and the new book no longer contained those emergency exit numbers. From the time that George and I first investigated the area in 1962 (unfortunately in the evening when it was dark and we couldn't see much), later in 1983 and up to the present. extensive street and sidewalk repaving and construction has taken place in the area completely obliterating any possible evidence of proposed station entrances or emergency exits.
