Very nice. I'm especially impressed with the 1982 film--gives much more the feel of really riding it than I'm used to seeing in railfan footage.

My own take after trying it a couple of years ago with the new equipment ... first off, the PCC's *flew* down the line, secondly the motorpeople were very nice and once the car emptied out, they'd talk with you about life and interesting things. It was much more personal then.

I suppose NYCT managers made it over there. The PCC's went along at a pretty good clip even on the curves. The Kinki's, not so. I had a cousin who lived out in Leonia and his friend's dad was one of the motorpeeps out there. So on Saturdays, once the car emptied out on the way out to Franklin, we'd often get "pedal time" on the PCC's.

The new cars seem slow ... very slow. And other riders said that the old cars got you where you were going in half the time and I have no reason to doubt them.

For a line with exactly one grade crossing (until you get to the new section) it's amazing they would be so slow.

Do the City Subway cars and the cars to the ex-EL station use different tracks at Pennsylvania?

Yes. At Penn Station, the original 7 route is still separate from the street-running above between the two stations. More info here:

It actually is longer. The old scheduled running time from Franklin Av to Penn Station was 12 minutes. Now it's 15. It's 20 from Grove to Penn.

Under the old system, if nobody wanted on or off at a stop... the car didn't stop. Now? Stop, open doors. Wait. Close doors. Lumber away.

And yes, as someone else said, it was much more personable with the operator out in the open like a bus operator.

NJ Transit basically took something that wasn't broke and "fixed" it.

Signals. Before they installed the crappier new signaling, the Kinki-Sharyo cars actually were faster than the PCCs. They still are, in a sense of ability. But the PCCs were far nicer either way; you now have POP Cops on the subway system, and the motorman is sequestered away in the front.

Good old NJT. Turned something good into something nondescript and crappy. Even blew extra money for no reason on that ridiculous island platform at Orange Street, never mind that annoying ramp that replaced Heller Parkway station. And getting rid of flag stops was inexcusable, especially since the Kinki-Sharyo cars have stop request strips.

And you know about the quality of the signaling system how exactly again? It couldn't possibly be that the signaling system will readily support an operation in all respects equivalent to that provided by the old system you pine for, but that the management does not want to accept the liability if they allowed such practices to continue, right? It would have been just as easy to implement the same operational changes on the old signaling system, as NYCT's installation of copious speed restrictions on a nearly obsolete fixed block wayside system demonstrates.

Which also serves to speed up the operation. One need only look at the nightmare on the MBTA Green Line before they introduced rear-door boarding for Charlie Card holders to see just how bad the City Subway could have been if they hadn't improved fare collection while implementing those other changes which increased run times.

The timetable is all route 7 (notice the "T0007" code; all bus division timetables have the route number included, and this goes back decades).

Hudson-Bergen light rail is coded as route 100 and the River Line is route 343.

It was Public Service that wanted to get rid of the rails; they once looked at making it part of their "dual-mode" All-Service Vehicle bus network, having it run on wires underground only though. Imagine these on route 7 instead of PCC cars . . .

Aside from the rubber tires, it's amusing how much GM wanted their beese to look like PCC's. "Public Service" is what I remember with the 7, that "New Jersey this and that" came later. Some pyramids are OK in my book. :)

The PCC's made the ride fun. Especially in warm weather with the windows open and their signature bouncy ride. The 10 min. ride seemed to short. You wished it could be longer.

Liability issues didn't start in the past few years, they've been around when the PCCs were still running, but they didn't choke the speeds then.

Agreed. The acceleration and deceleration were great, and the train noises were exhilirating but not too loud. Even in warm weather, the cars didn't get uncomfortable, unlike NYCTA cars without air conditioning.

Earlier PSCT equipment ran before they picked up the used PCCs, and there were also a batch of routes, not just line 7.

The cars before the PCC cars were wooden closed cars used. When the PCC cars arrived the City Subway (Route 7) was the only rail line left.

The Public Service Corporation had two main operating companies. One was Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) which still exists today. The other was Public Service Coordinated Transport (formed when Public Service Railway and Public Service Transportation Company merged in 1928). That was the "Public Service" that ran buses and trolleys.
In the 70's, PS changed the name of the transportation division to Transport of New Jersey and in 1982 sold the entire transport system to the State of New Jersey, which had recently formed NJ Transit.

The PSEG building on Park Place in Newark is, IINM, on the same site that the old PS building was which contained the trolley and bus terminal.

Newark City Subway was my first and for decades [until 2004] my only non-Philly [SEPTA] PCC ride.

In 2004 I finally got the chance to ride the Ashmont-Mattapan line in Boston on their PCC cars.

Of course, but the resignalling provided ample opportunity for the management to meddle in the operation's affairs. Without the resignalling they would have had to wait for some other pretense to enact the same procedures with the old system.

Eh, but they could have just done that with the old signalling, quietly "tweak" it, so to speak. OTOH, with time, comes new management, new POV's, maybe a new bunch who was more liability-conscious...
