And you know about the quality of the signaling system how exactly again? It couldn't possibly be that the signaling system will readily support an operation in all respects equivalent to that provided by the old system you pine for, but that the management does not want to accept the liability if they allowed such practices to continue, right? It would have been just as easy to implement the same operational changes on the old signaling system, as NYCT's installation of copious speed restrictions on a nearly obsolete fixed block wayside system demonstrates.

Which also serves to speed up the operation. One need only look at the nightmare on the MBTA Green Line before they introduced rear-door boarding for Charlie Card holders to see just how bad the City Subway could have been if they hadn't improved fare collection while implementing those other changes which increased run times.
