CTA plan ‘would not have happened on the Brown Line’ (CTA accused of racism)

A small skeptical crowd turned out Monday night — for the first of five planned community meetings — to raise concerns about the Chicago Transit Authority’s five-month shut down of the south leg of the Red Line for reconstruction next year.

The use of extra buses to help make up for the loss of Red Line stops between 95th and 63rd appeared to be a major concern among the 70 or so people who showed up at the South Shore Cultural Center.

Queen Parker, 74, a Roseland resident, was skeptical about the CTA’s plans, given how bad the existing bus service is.

“The bus service we get out here is atrocious,” Parker said. “It’s really time consuming.”

Parker suggested that whatever the number of extra buses the CTA plans to add on the South Side, they should “quadruple” it.

Lionel Walker, 67, a South Shore resident, said he was disgusted with his previous experience dealing with shuttle buses during work on the Red Line in 2006.

“This would not have happened on the Brown Line or any line serving the white community,” Walker said to a smattering of applause from the audience.

CTA Board Chairman Terry Peterson told Walker that 100 extra buses will be added to help serve the areas affected by the Red Line project.

The CTA will completely rebuild the Red Line track from Cermak Road to 95th Street — a 10-mile stretch of tracks built in 1969. During the $425 million project, the agency will offer commuters alternatives that include taking shuttle buses from closed stations on the Red Line to the Green Line at Garfield.

The meetings are intended to educate the public about the project and to collect feedback to “fine tune” bus routes and transit options, said Molly Sullivan, a CTA spokeswoman.

Well, CTA is already racist for having a Brown Line. What do they expect?

Wouldn't preference given to the Brown Line be the exact opposite of racism?

I'm bothered by the trend to shutting down entire lines for rehab. Yes, it gets a lot of work done faster, but how eseential is transit, if you can feel comfortable not supplying service for such a long time?

The Manhattan El was very proud of themselves for building the express tracks on the 2nd, 3rd and 9th without any interruption longer than (IIRC) 20 minutes, or so they claimed.

When Manhattan Junction was rebuilt into what is now Broadway Junction, they ran trains through a loop in East New York Yard to maintain service.

When the CTA moved the (now) Blue Line to the center of the Eisenhower Expressway, they ran the trains on a shoo-fly in the street rather than interrupt service. Not any more.

With these typical northerners, they should just shut it down and point to the GM dealership.

I strongly second your POV. As a transit dependent person, full shutdown makes getting around difficult--why we built these things in the first place. This is also why I resent overnight closures which are in effect curfews for those of us not able to drive.

It's kind of like government saying: "Look how nice things will be at the end, even though we'll make your life Hell Light for five months."

The only long shut-downs I thought were justified was the Williamsburg Bridge because the alternative could have been cars and trains in the East River, and the Franklin Shuttle, because it was in that bad shape, there was no place for a shoo-fly, and it looked like the alternative would have been abandonment.

Right, but having ridden the Garfield Park "shoe-fly" while the Congress median was being built, I know it can be done.
Frankly, if CTA had balls, they would take over the express lanes of the Dan Ryan for the buses to guarantee decent service. The other option which I have advocated elsewhere is the Gray Line proposal for restoring short headway service on the underused Metra Electric which has stations connecting to many of the same crosstown buses WITH CTA fares.

Or, they could take over one express lane at a time for the temporary track.

Analogies aren't there. The Lake and South Side el had to be structurally rebuilt end to end.

All they did with the Ravenswood Branch and local North Side L south of Belmont is extend platforms 100 feet, though the Fullerton and Belmont stations were rebuilt from scratch with 3 tracking thru a short area.

They could leverage use of Metra Electric and Rock Island with a little thought. Both are under-used.

What is "LBGT" line ? Do you mean "LGBT" ?
In any case "Boystown" runs between Belmont and Addison on the Red line.

yes,and by the time that happened, ridership had migrated to the Red because the Green was very slow and had longer headways. Also, if you go around along the Green line today, there are many vacant lots where businesses and housing used to stand. The South Side is seriously in need of investment both financial and human.

and that investment starts with good transportation. If the network is not up to spec, what's the point?
