A viewer contacted NBC 4 New York with concerns over a distracted conductorMetro-North officials say they are trying to identify a train operator captured on video appearing distracted and engrossed in a newspaper while conducting a rush-hour train. The video was brought to Metro-North's attention by NBC 4 New York after a viewer contacted the station expressing concerns about the conductor, who was reading a newspaper and using a cell phone while the train was in motion. "He only looked up when the bells went off," John Bingham told NBC 4 New York, referring to the sounds that signal when the train was approaching a station. "That made me nervous. What if one of the bells didn't go off and something happened with the train?" Bingham said he boarded the 8:34 a.m. Grand Central-bound train at Wakefield Wednesday when he noticed the train operator reading a newspaper "cover to cover" and typing on a cell phone. The Yonkers resident has been commuting into Manhattan for two years and says he's concerned about conductors being distracted in light of terror plots targeting commuter trains and past train derailments. --- http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Metro-North-Train-Conductor-Reading-Newspaper-Cell-Phone-Distracted-157673025.html |

Conductor??? Train Operator??? Engineer??? Make up your minds people (the public or the person/persons who observed) as to who you saw!!!!Conductors wear uniforms and do not, per se, operate the train!! ENGINEERS do (as MNR does not have "train operators" or motormen) As far as the offense, that is indeed inexcusable and the person should be disciplined to the fullest!!! More than enough warnings (via train service notices, bulletin orders with rules reminders and changes to operating rules, practices and such, many posted copies previously of FRA Emergency Order 26, etc.) have been posted, written notices by line supervision, etc., plus even our union has issued numerous reminders!! It is indeed inexcusable, and should be taken care of appropriately. But now, hate to say it, do look for the cab door glass to be covered over more times now. |

Posted by Gold_12TH on Thu Jun 7 12:38:12 2012, in response to Metro-North to Investigate Video of Distracted Conductor - NBC4, posted by Gold_12TH on Wed Jun 6 23:32:46 2012. A viewer sent in this video of a Metro-North engineer reading a newspaper while operating a train. It happened on a morning rush-hour train to Grand Central Terminal Wednesday, June 6. A Metro-North train engineer has been captured on video appearing distracted and engrossed in a newspaper while operating a rush hour train. Officials said Thursday that the engineer, an agency employee since 1988 and an engineer since 2001, has been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation. The MTA declined to release his name. The video was brought to Metro-North's attention by NBC 4 New York after a viewer contacted the station expressing concerns about the train engineer. "He only looked up when the bells went off," John Bingham told NBC 4 New York, referring to the sounds that signal when the train was approaching a station. "That made me nervous. What if one of the bells didn't go off and something happened with the train?" Bingham said he boarded the 8:34 a.m. Grand Central-bound train at Wakefield on Wednesday when he noticed the engineer reading a newspaper "cover to cover." The Yonkers resident has been commuting into Manhattan for two years and says he's concerned about engineers being distracted in light of exposed terror plots targeting commuter trains and of past train derailments attributed to distracted engineers. He said he planned to file a complaint with Metro-North. The MTA said in a statement that "reading anything, texting or using cell phones while operating a train is obviously not acceptable. Metro-North will take action to ensure this does not happen again." After NBC 4 New York reported the story, Metro-North said it planned to reinstruct its train crews on Thursday that the behavior would not be tolerated. --- http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/Metro-North-Train-Conductor-Reading-Newspaper-Distracted-157673025.html |

On NJT, Metro North, and LIRR, all locomotive engineers are qualified to run locomotives and do so when that equipment is used. While M-8's or Arrow MU's don't have actual locomotives, the control car of each is considered to be one.On an M8 he's a Motorman, just that that union has fought to keep the title of engineer So according to your logic, if an M-8 set breaks down and a diesel set is used as a rescue train, the person who operated the M-8 is not qualified to operate the diesel engine, right? |

All NYC-type MU cars *are* "Locomotives" and face the same federal inspection requirements as any other locomotive. They all operate under their own power.Cab Cars are a different animal: It has no motors to inspect. The control positions of the cab cars do face all applicable inspections of a locomotive as applies to them. |

No, there aren't dead man's switches per se. About every 25-28 seconds, a whistle sounds and he must touch the acknowledge lever (seen doing this in the video).
