That may be true, but the transoms from the older cars would certainly have experienced more metal fatigue than newer ones so why replace a failing part with something that's likely to fail much sooner? |

Is it possible, the older parts still had "life or mileage in them" after being pulled from service. This life was than tapped while newer original parts were pulled and stored as rebuilds or overhauls were made? |

The same situation exists in the Flatbush area. When the IRT was built, ground water was drawn by thousands of home wells. Once "City Water" from the Catskills, was introduced, the ground water level came back up. This caused some track problems on the Nostrand Ave Line. To bad the EPA and TA couldn't purify and bottle this groundwater and export it to Water deficient countries. WIN WIN WIN |

The trucks after the R-42 had tread brake units so they would not be useable as built but in most cases, a Transom form a General Steel truck or a transom from a Buckeye Truck would likely work in any other General Steel or Buckeye truck respectively. When trucks are torn down, it's fairly certain that when re-assembled, they are not mated with their former parts. |

Just as a lark, what would be required to restore 80 of the stripped "enhanced" R44's to service? Since this is going to be a problem which will come up every summer until 2017 at the earliest ..... |
