The idiocy of premature scrapping the R-44s, will come back to bite the current TA execs in the ass every summer until the R-179s are delivered and the inevitable problems are worked out. This is what happens when you allow equipment decisions to be made by non-equipment people. |

If it is a low amount, would the costs of maintaining a small oddball fleet AND the R32s still be lower than the cost of continuing to run all R32s? |

Prior to their early retirement, there was a $19 million investment in 172 R-44s. By 2009/2010, the performance of those cars had exceeded their historic highs and surpassed the R-46s. There were three options on the table.1) Continue the Pitkin Shop enhancement program, which was succeeding. 2) Mothball the non-enhanced 100 cars and retain the 172 car fleet. 3) Scrap the 60 R-44s which were identified as having suspected compromised frames and retain a fleet of 212 enhanced cars. Since the (C) needed just 144 cars + 24 to 28 spares, virtually any of the three options would have allowed the R-32s to be mercifully put down. Instead, it seems that certain people came in with another agenda and were not confused by the proven results of the fleet. |

There are roughly 80 cars that could be restored and pressed back into service but since it was the "enhanced" cars that were cannibalized first for their wheels/axles and controller parts (for the R-68 SMS Program) the 80 restore-able cars would not have been enhanced and would not perform well enough to make their resurrection worth while. |

That's up to the dispatcher on duty @ Rock. Pk. since full length trains are run on the weekend shuttle from Memorial Day to Labor Day. All they need is 3 trains. Why not run R46's if available? Safer for the c/r. R32's in the yard can take the weekend off and be used on the Rock Park "specials". Half trip, then lay up. |

The problem with putting the R-32s on the B is that the current side route signs read "Wash Hts/6 Av/West End" or "6 Av/West End" so the signs would be wrong since the B is now Concourse/6 Av/ Brighton and I doubt that the MTA is interested in installing new signs of a type that can only be used on that type of car and will not really be lasting that long. |
