Does it all come down to the RFW for you? I get the sneaking suspicion you're not going to care for PATCO in the next year or two.

Sitting in a detached Amfleet is better than sitting in the Pittsburgh station for four hours?? The real problem is that Amtrak can't do this move using only the crew and engines from the Cap.

Whatever, I might actually be interested in this service even if it means having to travel to Philly to take advantage of it, but these through cars in no way improves the service for PHL-CHI riders.

Unless they went with Superliner baggage cars being the only baggage cars for Capitol Limited trainsets, the train would run with independent Pennsylvanian and Capitol Limited "sections", which would mean no diner or sightseer lounge for the Pennsylvanian folk. In theory if the Capitol Limited trainset was to use only Superliner baggage cars and placed its transition sleeper on the rear then it could integrate the two halves.

BTW I haven't heard anything about this through car plan before now. It seems awfully complicated if you ask me.

They do sell the transdorm rooms 17-24 on nearly every train now. On a few of them, they still use a few of the high numbered rooms as crew accommodations, but on most trains 1-8 is enough for the crew.

sure it does. if there is a through sleeper, one just snores... in coach, still better than the waiting room. The real question is how long between Pennsylvanian arrival and Capitol arrival. Given today's lineside fire delay of the Capitol, having through cars would have prevented the Pennsylvanian from leaving we/o the through riders.

If a delay will be that severe, wouldn't it be better to just reroute people through DC?

There "will be" nothing until the train actually starts running. Amtrak has proposed a lot of services that never get off the ground for one reason or another. If CP-WEST PITT were still in place the single level cars could be added to the front in both directions, but its not so Amtrak will need to have a second set of locomotives switch the through cars on at Pittsburgh.

The plan is to add a switch.

The current intention is that this will happen when the first new Viewliner Sleepers arrive.

Wonder if it will be interlocked or not...I'm assuming not as that would cost several million. Sucks that NS took out CP-WEST PITT, Amtrak could have started the service any time it wanted at that point or gone to an outside operator like Iowa Pacific until the Viewliners arrived.

If that switch is restored then the single level cars will be placed on the front of the Cap and the rear of the Pennsylvanian.
