About halfway to Dallas we pass the TRE shops. RDC's are in evidence along with Hertzog RR (nee ATSF) 972, a GP9:

Along with more Bomb BiLevels:

Next along the route we pass a maintenance yard for Hertzog (operator of the TRE) along with some MOW equipment:

As we approach DUS we start to see DART trains:

And before you know it, we're at Dallas Union Station:

Welcome to Dallas, y'all.... In the background is Amtrak's Texas Eagle, loading passengers on its way west to Ft. Worth and from there to LA. As much as I loved traveling last year on the Coast Starlight, I would not take the Eagle...an overnight layover in San Antonio, TX, ranging from 7 to 9.5 hours, is made in order to accommodate train coupling operations. That's ridiculous; I'd rather drive to San Antonio and hop on board there:

DUS has a nice collection of tailsign replicas from the great trains of the past that called on the station:

Take the long way home....

Excellent set of photos, Dave. I haven't seen any west-of-Mississippi freights in a while and the new liveries are beautiful.

your pal,
Fred

I was looking at the schedule and wondering about that. Why does it need that long of a layover? What is it coupling? It makes it extremely slow compared to the other cross country routes.

The Texas Eagle provides daily service between San Antonio and Chicago and tri-weekly service to Los Angeles. By switching cars at San Antonio between the Texas Eagle and the Sunset Limited, Amtrak provides a Los Angeles - Chicago through car service. The two routes’ respective schedules, however, result in very long layovers for connecting customers during which through cars are parked overnight.

They can't spring for an extra locomotive and crew 3 times a week? I might like taking a cross country trip by train, but not with that kind of layover. Amtrak seems to purposefully make themselves less attractive with long layovers and connection times.

Thanks for the info.
