Schumer wants pedestrian/bike path on new Amtrak rail bridge between Albany and Rensselaer |

Posted by Olog-hai on Tue May 8 01:55:58 2012 The way Schumer wants things, it might be cheaper to rebuild Albany Union Station. Maybe the man should actually ride the trains more . . . (but on second thought, doing that didn't help Biden.)Albany Times Union

Albany Union station is LONG gone, a bank bought it and abandoned it. Then they built I-787 where the tracks were ages ago. Albany turned the rest of it into a park. And the former D&H headquarters is now SUNY. No point in a train station there. The Amtrak bridge is on the verge of collapse although survivors are unlikely to drown as the Hudson ain't that deep anymore. As long as they HAVE to build a new bridge, putting sidewalks on the outside of the span is no big deal compared to the costs of replacing it anyway. Money's already there to eliminate the last bottleneck, the single track between Rennselaer and Schenectady so even there they have to redo the bridge anyway to service the new second track that's being built. Fact is, a pedestrian/bike crossing would be a FABULOUS idea since you can't do that on the Dunn Memorial bridge OR the I-80 bridge. Your only option now is to swim. Or more accurately, wade ... Stick to fantasies of New Jersey, we LIKE this idea. |

LAB has two tracks, so there's no need to rebuild it to remove the "bottleneck". Also, I don't think that bridge is 150 years old, it's made of steel, not cast iron. |

I-90 dude...Yeah..I know.. The flaw in the 787 design is the rail tracks in the middle without a station..in downtown, not that there is much there to see..but that hop over from [UHHH]RENDERYOUBROKEASHELLAER IS A VERY SAD THING..EVEN FOR DRIVERS. [Im sorry..never liked that town for some reason..just gets under my skin..] |

They're adding a second track between there and Schenectady and will be putting CWR where the bridge is, all the way down to the platforms. All I know is that the bridge is this shy of being condemned, so apparently it's in very bad shape. The rebuild planned is part of the route project between RENS and SCHDY.FWIW, bridges up here have different issues than down along the coast. Hudson is pretty shallow and bridges up here suffer from both ice heaves of the piers as well as high flow rates in spring from the snow melt. Dunn Memorial dropped some road and requires regular closings for repairs, and let's not forget what happened to the Schoharie Creek bridge on the Thruway caused by scouring of the piers. |

The pedestrian paths on many bridges were removed by order of the US War Department as a security measure at the start of World War II. Most were not restored at the end of hostilities. The postwar years were marked by the auto, oil and rubber industries trying to remove all traces of competing transportation modes. Walking, bike riding as well as rail transit were targeted. The Parker Dunn Bridge is one example of bridge that was designed without thought of making pedestrian/bicycle access convenient. The best north-south bicycle routing is on the Hudson River east bank south of Albany and on its west bank north of Albany. This makes crossing the Parker Dunn Bridge a trouble spot. It's a little better, now that they built a bike path on the Albany side. However, crossing that bridge is only marginally better than going though the entire length of Troy for the next crossing. As Mr. SelkirkTMO noted, the marginal cost of building decent pedestrian/bicycle facilities on bridges is low when building the bridge from scratch. It's the retrofit that is usually cost prohibitive. |

The Dunn bridge *does* have a pedestrian/bike way, on the north side... it sucks. The ramps ice over and for years the streetlamps didn't even work so it was almost completely useless in the winter.A bike/walkway on the railroad bridge would be okay, since it is not unecessarily high. The neighborhood on the Albany side isn't all that great, though. And the only thing I use the bridge for is getting to/from the train station on Sundays after the buses stop running, so the real best option would be to get rid of the Dunn and replace it with a drawbridge w/sidewalks, like was there before. |

The other added thing about the Dumb Memorial bridge is that the sidewalk is right there where all the tanker trucks overturn and crash on that curvy thing there. I wouldn't walk it. Pity Bruno's little monorail dance party thingy never happened ... that woulda been neat. :) |
