Like the other diesels, they've got a third rail shoe beam on one truck but that's only for mounting ice scrapers. The 10 GE-built R77E's are the only electric locomotives in the fleet. There are also the 18 R127/R134 electrically powered refuse motors and the various former revenue cars in work motor service but that's about it. |

Posted by Rockparkman on Wed May 2 20:08:22 2012, in response to Re: R156 Locomotives, posted by Jace on Wed May 2 09:07:16 2012. The R77Es are very interesting machines. Since they have GE763 motors which operate on a maximum of 300 volts, the 650 volt third rail current has to be reduced in voltage. This is accomplished by using two GE752 (road unit) motors mechanically coupled to form a rotary converter. voltage is easily controlled by modulating the excitation voltage applied to the field (connections F and FF) of the driven 752 and taking the output from the Armature of that motor (A,AA) This current is used to operate thwe locomotive. |

And don't say safety because this cab meets all new safety standards. On a positive note I'm glad it has ditch lights so they can be seen better, hopefully they wig wag so workers know when it's starting to move (besides the 2 toots). On a funny note take a look at the marker lights, they look like locomotive nipples LOL. |

SIR locomotives are normal railroad size that's why they look big when coupled to say a R33 rider car. As for the other question I think everyone has a different reason for puttin the cab in the rear. |

No, your eyes are not fooling you, nor is it the wide angle. The body is longer, and the "porches" in the back and front of the locomotive (extended platforms) are eliminated and much shorter, much as they are on most diesels. What I think is ridiculous are: 1). The digital bell!!!!! GRRRRRRRRRR!!! 2). All the LED lights along the walk and body!! I guess they want everyone to see and marvel at this locomotive in the night!! 3). The new MTA scheme on it!!! Goodness that scheme is just NOT made for an NYCT work motor!!! Bring back the yellow and black!!! |

That's another thing I don't get, they want the work motors to be more visible with the green stripes and this unit has blue that don't really stand out. I like how the walk way has LED's, you can't misstep there's a friggin railing to hold on to! LOL Not tryin to hate but man they really wasted money on this one I think. My .02 sorry. |
