Since they have GE763 motors which operate on a maximum of 300 volts, the 650 volt third rail current has to be reduced in voltage. This is accomplished by using two GE752 (road unit) motors mechanically coupled to form a rotary converter. voltage is easily controlled by modulating the excitation voltage applied to the field (connections F and FF) of the driven 752 and taking the output from the Armature of that motor (A,AA) This current is used to operate thwe locomotive. |
