Nice photo essay - let's hope that a few 5 gal. tubs of pool paint make their way up there; sure needs it (especially @ 182-183). Put some of the local out-of-work folk to work scraping the ceilings first.wayne |

Agreed. This has been my stomping grounds since the late 1970s. Up 'til now the most significant improvement I've seen was when they replaced the incandescent lighting at 155th-8th, 167th, 170th, 174-175th, Tremont and 182-183rd stations. |

Remember how dark the mezzanine was at Fordham Road? That has only recently been remediated (~ 2007 or so). Tremont Avenue got a nice rehab only to find the storm water inching its way back in. And then there's the issue with the worst-of-the-worst Concourse-wise: 205th Street. A sieve.wayne |

I remember all too well, as Fordham Rd is my home station. Select stairwells are under repair right now.At this point, 205 either needs a full-rehab or a full-REBUILD. my blog |

Anyone ever explain why the Concourse stations between 145th and Tremont use the brick-like tiles? This is the only IND line which used it. |

Ugh, you had to mention 205th! At this point, that station needs to be CLOSED for a complete rehab! It looks more like a museum exhibit, than a subway station! The water damage alone has destroyed that station! Geez...As for Tremont, it didn't look as bad as it did when I took the D there back in 2007. Man, that erosion must've been quick! |

I've certainly never seen any explanation of why they were used.Another oddity is the plain white-on-black name tablets at 167 St. and 170 St. The other side-platform stations on the line have colored borders around the name tablets, but they also have two streets in the official station names (155th St.-8th Ave., 161st St.-River Ave., 174th-175th St., and 182nd-183rd St.) The pattern seems to have been that stations along the Concourse line with only one street in their names got the colored borders omitted, but that wasn't done on other lines either. |

I also had no luck finding concrete explanations for the brick tile; mayhap they were experimental? In any case, they're holding up much better than the square tiles at many other IND stations; a good ol' power wash seems to be all they need to look "new" again. Also, the brick tiles give the Concourse Line a "unique" feel relative to other IND construction. IINM, brick tiles also exists in the 145 St mezzanine. Another oddity is the plain white-on-black name tablets at 167 St. and 170 St...The pattern seems to have been that stations along the Concourse line with only one street in their names got the colored borders omitted, but that wasn't done on other lines either. Interesting observation. Wonder if that was indeed the case... visit my blog! |
