I also had no luck finding concrete explanations for the brick tile; mayhap they were experimental?

In any case, they're holding up much better than the square tiles at many other IND stations; a good ol' power wash seems to be all they need to look "new" again. Also, the brick tiles give the Concourse Line a "unique" feel relative to other IND construction.

IINM, brick tiles also exists in the 145 St mezzanine.

Another oddity is the plain white-on-black name tablets at 167 St. and 170 St...The pattern seems to have been that stations along the Concourse line with only one street in their names got the colored borders omitted, but that wasn't done on other lines either.

Interesting observation. Wonder if that was indeed the case...
