Aqueduct Casino Opens Today; Subway Skybridge To Be Finished In Dec. |

Posted by JayZeeBMT on Fri Oct 28 06:12:58 2011 Casino gambling arrives in NYC today at 1 PM, when the Aqueduct 'Racino' opens to the public. The new venue will be able to accomodate 5,000 visitors, who can play 2,000 electronic "table games" like roulette, and 2,300 video slot machines. The casino area includes restaurants, a bar, and when Phase 2 of the project is completed in December, a new skybridge will connect the (A) line to the casino. Eventually, a hotel is planned for the casino, along with more restaurants and 2,515 more slots, and an "event space" for shows and conventions.Given Aqueduct's close proximity to JFK Airport, and the fact that it already has direct subway service, this could be a real economic boost for Ozone Park--and the rest of the city. Could this be a harbinger of more Rockaway (A) service to meet growing demand? |

Maybe not Aqueduct but definitely Howard Beach. That way, the needs of both racino and JFK passengers can be met. The only problem I see is what additional service should be extended out there? If the Cs were extended during its current hours of operation, those passengers might complain about the lack of express service. On the other hand, if Lefferts As were sent out there and Lefferts service were replaced by C service extended from Euclid, then the Lefferts passengers would complain about losing their express service. At some point if such a service enhancement were to be instituted some passengers will have to be unhappy. |

The casino is scheduled to be open from 8 AM to 4 AM, every day. When the additional floors, theater, and restaurants are completed, there will be passenger traffic going to and from Aqueduct all the time (which never existed in such numbers, or at such hours, before), plus the existing JFK traffic. I think eventually, NYCT will elect to add some short (A) runs that turn at Howard Beach, or eliminate the (S) Rock Park shuttle, and run alternate Rockaway (A) service there instead. I think the increased ridership to Aqueduct/JFK, plus the ongoing, new development of the Rockaways, will support such an increase in service. |

To have trains terminating or short turning at Aqueduct would be absurd, with the airport connection so close, they should just do it there if anywhere. |

That's a change from what I remember hearing:Originally, I thought they were doing it to the existing Aqueduct Racetrack station, which is why I brought up what I did about if it were me running the Casino, I'd be looking to have that built to a three-platform station with the missing "express" track rebuilt so when needed (i.e.: Rest of Rockaway line is out) it can be used as a terminal. |

I believe they got rid of the roof that had sheltered passengers up the ramp to that station in part to prepare for the new ramp connecting to that station (which makes sense because that is what used to be the Grandstand). |

Sending local trains to Lefferts wouldnt be a big problem for customers as most think. Most people take a Far Rock train and transfer at Euclid anyway. The Lefferts (A)s get sent to JFK just to be safe because if that bridge opens up its backing up the whole line. It all comes down to a talk with the train crews. |

I would have the existing Aqueduct station become a short-turn terminal for the A when needed (i.e., when the rest of the Rockaway branch, including Howard Beach is out), and be willing to pay for it and rebuilding the missing express track myself as well as an island and a southbound platform at the Aqueduct Racetrack station if I were running the Casino at Aqueduct. |
