They said CBTC would lead to faster trains that can run closer together, has this been true on the Canarsie line?NO!!! CBTC nor any other signal system does not increase the service level capacity. That is governed by acceleration, service and emergency braking rates, dwell times at stations and geometry at the terminal stations. The signal system alters none of these. The Canarsie Line ran 24 tph at one time. They are struggling to maintain 17 tph today. The 24 tph is limited by the terminals. Without terminal constraints, the intermediate station capacity is a nominal 40 tph for most lines. The Flushing Line ran 36 tph before the 1970's cutbacks, with multiple terminals at the Flushing/Corona end. The Third Ave El ran 42 tph with multiple terminals at both the uptown and downtown ends. Train speed, or more precisely end to end running time, is more a function of acceleration, service braking rate and station dwell time. Route architecture and schedules, designed to minimize merging conflicts are other factors. The signal system does not play any part in this. |

Na, this time the MTA know what it did wrong. First of all, all the signal that are on the line will remain unlike on the L line. This is how the CBTC system for the 7 line and the rest of the systerm will be from now on. They found out if the CBTC goes down on the L line, the line will shout down since there no back up signel system. On the 7 line the system will all flash excpet when a train has to run in Bypass mode. The L line Bypass mode it not even a opction anymore. |

It sould line up train automatily. The train is giving its call letter by the computer base on the Schudle it has. So the Switchs and Signal sould all be set up for that train as it comes up to them. |

So if they implement this system wide, it should be able to handle all the merging and diverging of subway routes on the fly?In the case where the switch/crossover after Queens Plaza broke, and the M and F had to swap northbound routes to Queens, would that be able to be programmed into the system? |

The N from Times Square or 59th and Lex (reached via 4/5/6 from Grand Central) to Queensboro Plaza for the 7 which is running east of there seems like the obvious route, and is surely what the MTA will suggest. |

They need track circuits, integrated with CBTC to handle switching. They also need track circuits to detect broken rails. |

The L line will have to be re-CBTC'd and maybe even re-signaled anyway. The CBTC system for the 7 and later conversions will be incompatible with the L. And Siemens won't supply those proprietary parts and circuits for long. |

The L line will never be re-signaled. The L line in going to be in a world of there own with there own set of cars. The 2 system will never be compatible. The one thing I do see are the R160a's for are needed for the L line not being able to run on the J/M every again, but buy the time these line get CBTC the R143 and R160 might be getting replaced.
