No. The R-188 cars will be inserted in intermediate positions in the selected 5 car units to make them into 6 car units.

There was a thread here recently that indicated that the MTA is considering retrofitting all roll sign equipped cars with the possible exception of the R-32s with LED signs to expedite sign changing at terminals. Whether they will be the simpler R-46 type that merely displays route, train classification and destination inside the car or will include FIND wasn't made clear. It may depend on which type the MTA finds cheaper to install.

Oh. I thought the R188's were to be 2 * 11 car trains, plus a 23rd cars to make an R142 11 cars.

All:

AFIAK, so far the entire R-188 contract still consists of just three 11-car pilot trains, one of 10 rebuilt R-142A's (7211-7220) plus one new "B" car (I believe to be 7921). Also two entirely new 11-car trains of one 5-car and one 6-car set. These will be equipped with CBTC.

There is no funding as yet for the balance of this order so it is all "on hold" until the money becomes available to acquire the balance of a proposed 506 cars for the 7 line.

Another problem is funding the actual CBTC installation on the 7 line. I believe they have a contractor for system design, but I am unsure if physical plant work has actually begun. Either way, it will also require hundreds of million$ that MTA may not as yet have, and would probably take 2-3 years of service disruptions to complete. One phrase I have heard passed around as a joke in this regard is: "CBTC = Catch Bus To Corona..."

Perhaps someone out there has more recent information in this regard to share, but 33 cars is all there is to this (so far) as I understand things. The 10-car test train is supposed to identify potential operational issues regarding the use of R-142A's (plus one) on the 7 line prior to delivery of the first pilot train at the end of 2011 or early in 2012. This set will be permanently assigned to Corona.

Barring the unexpected it seems that the Javits extension, when opened, will be getting plain old block signals and using the R-62As (pilot trains aside).

That's the same math that I have.

And yes, the outright "conversion" of R-142A's to R-188's was forsaken to cut projected costs even more, but they will be equipped with CBTC THROUGH the R-188 Contract. I am not sure if that means there will be some kind of re-classification as a result (say an R-142C?). It's all a sign of the times, but bottom line is I wouldn't be waiting for that first R-62A train at Pelham Bay Park or Flatbush Ave. anytime soon.

It will be politically difficult to replace NTT trains with dingy SMEE cars from the 1980's on any of the main lines routes.

I've been saying that all along. The politicians will be screaming. A sort of NIMBYism. "Put them somewhere else but not on my line."

The best place for them would be on line 5. Of course, the number of cars needed could be adjusted, if some cars are left over no problem on putting them on another line. But since E.180th is the barn for the 5 line and the newest in the IRT and a showcase barn, I would think NYCT politics would dictate R142's to say on the 5.

No rush, it will be several years and more than one NYCT administration down the road who will have to deal with who gets the current Corona fleet. A currently unknown group of passengers will be pissed then.

It didn't seem any different to the jamaica people in the 1970s when the R-27/30s were replaced by R-9s due to the swapping of the M and J(QJ) on the Southern Division.

They could in fact replace the R142 cars TRANSFERED FROM the 2/5 lines to the 6,who's R142A cars are going to the 7.

Anyone with common sense knows they couldnt replace the entire fleet car to car ratio with the 62a from Corona..

What's common sense is that a two-way fleet swap is preferable over a three-way fleet swap. Therefore, it's common sense to keep the R142s on the 2 and 5 lines right where they are.

Too bad for them! You don't hear West Siders complaining about not getting the R142s on the 1 line. The R62As, along with the much older Redbirds, ran on the the 6 for so many years and no one complained then. They also dealt with graffiti'ed up SMEE cars for years. I keep asking, what is so different now that they would complain about subway cars they already had?

The point is if a line currently has R142's and they are replaced by R62A's they'll bitch. Since the #1 never had R142's they're not going to bitch about equipment.

Yes, really. It's been really really bad. I'd say that on at least 15% to 35% of the 1 trains I've been on, the car I initially boarded was a HOT car.

That has always been my issue with linked 4 or 5 car units. If one car is bad, be it dead motor, faulty air conditioning or whatever so many times they run the car anyway.

In DC, they can lock out a hot car or a car with a minor enough of a defect such that passengers shouldn't be in that car but they can keep the train in service. After all IMO, better to have 5 out of 6 or 7 out of 8 cars on a train available as opposed to zero. I take it that can't be done in New York?

IIRC, didn't they do this once before and the problems they discovered were the reason why the line did not get any of these cars when the Redbirds were retired ?

The reason that the line didn't get any of these cars is because there were no cars available to make any of them into 6 car sets for the 11 car trains that the line requires. When the car order for additional cars to make such sets is finally decided on and delivered, then the NTTs can be transferred to the Flushing Line.

A while ago, I spotted an A train of R32 cars that had only nine cars carrying passengers. The tenth car was not only empty, but the doors didn't open when the doors on the other nine did.

IIRC, it was the day that it hit 104°F in NY.

I remember 4 years ago I caught an R32 E Train where in the first car the lights where off, the doors didn't open, and a TA worker was gesturing for pax to take the car behind in in the set.
