The Car from The Colin Fergussin Killings

Formerly 9892 renumbered 9945-46 rests on the east end of a 12 car M3 set in Ronkonkoma Yard taken through the fence. Set came in that Friday as Train 2058 which is usually crowded, so M3's are the usual on Summer Friday's:

Quite a catch!! In a way nice, in a way spooky!! Just like when I both worked, and shot photos of, R40M 4460/R42 4665, each ones mate destroyed in the Williamsburg Bridge wreck in 1995 involving motorman Leyton Gibson.

I remember being told by an instructor during refresher training, back in 1996 (!) that "the Colin Ferguson cars were destroyed by the LIRR". I always suspected this was the MTA's line to the victims' families, and that the cars in question were actually repaired, cleaned, and renumbered. This pic confirms that...thanks!

The cars were ordered held out of service as evidence for the trials, appeals and the inevitable lawsuits. Rumor had it that the LIRR took all of the bullet riddled seats and panels + the car numbers and put them into a pair that was due to be scrapped. They repaired the actual cars and released them back into service under the current numbers...

Yet they didn't preserve the (R21?) car involved in the Goetz shooting, not even for trial. When Slotnick took the jurors into a Redbird for them to "experience" the scene, the original car was already scrapped, or so they said.

I don't know that any of the bullet holes made it to steel of fiberglass. I was under the impression that all of the shots fired by Goetz ended up where he intended them to end up.

Interestingly enough Ray Kelly's son Greg is a co-anchor on Good Day NY and Ray Kelly appears every so often and during one interview I believe he mentioned his time at NYCTPD and TBH I wish NYCTPD still was around.

Correct, I was pointed out once that compared to the other M3 pairs, there is a very distinctive clean, and deodorized smell to it a couple of years ago. Another friend of mine told me the other day while on the Port Washington Branch that same pair had a brake issue on it, and was sent back to Hillside for repair.

Ray Kelly was never the head of the Transit Police. You are thinking of Bill Bratton, wwho headed the Transit Police for a couple of years, left and went back to Boston and then came back here to head the NYPD under Guliani. Bratton was the NYPD Commissioner when the Transit and Housing Departments were merged into the NYPD.
