So you believe that a person unfamiliar with a highway's interchange layouts but knowing that he will have to go left will expect to exit from the left lane? SERIOUSLY?!?For another thing, motorists should always KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS. Left exits interfere with that. If you do not expect to exit left, you should do that and you probably shouldn't be doing any passing if you know you'll be exiting soon but don't know exactly how soon. |

Maybe he didn't trust them since he got wrong directions once from them. That would be retarded. it also wasn't my position to TELL him what to do. You know what I meant. It was certainly your position to tell him to stop dicking around because you want to get to your destination TODAY, not next week. Why don't you grow a brain and stop insulting everyone in 50% of your posts? I certainly don't insult everyone. And when I want to insult someone, I am successful almost 100% of the time, not 50% of the time. Besides, how in the world would someone who is in unfamiliar territory and who hasn't done the proper advanced planning know that they ultimately need to be turning left from their current position at any one time??? Roads bend! Assuming they are too dumb to be looking at a compass, how will they know that it will be a left turn? |

They are meant to be seen at night!!! Seeing those signs is the most basic way that people know not to turn the wrong way down those streets!! If you follow the GPS's advice and turn down that street, then you are a bad driver and would likely do the same thing even without GPS! |

I had been to Haifa before, but never as a driver until earlier this week. Driving and walking or being a bus passenger are very different. Due to the hill, there are many staircases to create shortcuts over walking on regular streets that cars use, so the way one drives and the way one walks are often not the same. You shouldn't need a sign to tell you not to turn into the East River. There is a concrete barrier on the side of the highway that gives (at least to me) a pretty strong indication not to turn right. GPSs are only as good as their programming. Human beings can potentially do better. Based on the posts you've made in this thread, I'm forced to question your judgment as a driver; I don't think I'd feel terribly confident in your driving and decision making abilities while doing so. |

There is plenty of advance notice of all left exists. If the "tab" on the top of the sign with the exit number is flush with the left side of the main part of the sign, it is a left exit. If it is flush with the right side (or if it is centered or in some other position, assume) it is a right exit.View Larger Map |

The key to getting through both situations was common sense and orienteering skills, and you even agreed with me. |

You mean everyone is so close- minded or selfish that they can't put themselves in the place of someone who doesnt have all the timetables memorized and imagine how they would feel. No, I just mean that one tends not to pay as much attention to signage if one knows where one's going anyway. This board is inevitably full of people who know the subway well, so we're not exactly likely to be the most demanding people about information design on the subway. It doesn't mean that people don't care or that you're in any way wrong to care. As it happens, I agree with you about service spans on signage, although countdown clocks are inevitably a better solution than printing schedule information onto fixed signs (and then not replacing the signs when the schedule changes). |

Also, Haifa's streets are by no means straight. This is the route that Google wanted me to take and this is the route I ended up taking. I had a road map in Hebrew only that didn't include the details of the cities in the car and no GPS. Seem to have done OK using the skills I identified as being most important (and one can always ask for directions, though Israeli directions are often less than helpful). |

Just a heads up, where it says Time$ indicates where a digital clock would be positioned. The term comes from the BASIC programming language, where it is used as a read-only variable which returns a string formatted with the current time of day according to the computer's internal clock. For example: “PRINT TIME$” would work, but “TIME$ = "Kumquat"” would not. |

I've said that too. and I'm also a great believer in common sense. I really don't see whatbthe conflict is. |
