PHOTOS : More Thunder On The River Line!! Pt. 2 - West Haverstraw

Next stop on my River Line exploration takes me a little bit north to CP 33 in West Haverstraw, the start (northward; southward the end) of a 2 mile long passing siding extending from CP 35 in Stony Point to this location here. The grade crossing here for (he he he!! :-D) Railroad Avenue, is situated in the interlocking limits of CP 33. Let's do a little Jersey Mike-ism and look at the signals and area!! (NOTE: No trespassing was done, nor would it be!! These views were done with zoom lens from the sidewalk at the crossing and from a parking lots for a landscaping contractor firm alongside the tracks!! And the Haverstraw Police were right behind me, and do patrol frequently!! DO NOT attempt to trespass here!!!)

The old NYC-style searchlight signals are still in place both here for the southward homeball for the main, and the northward homeball protecting the south end of CP 33, and bear in mind these signals are sadly living on borrowed time, as CSX has rapidly begin replacing these and the Conrail tri-lights with the more typical hooded tri-lights. Even the masts are being replaced with the thick steel montrousities found elsewhere where the searchlights and tri-lights have been replaced

Views north and south of the team track siding. The once massive West Haverstraw NYC passenger station once existed in this area, but sadly is long gone. The sidetracks here are a common place to see bad-ordered cars and MOW equipment stored. One day (which would be lucky for me, not so lucky for the CSX "NI-SELKIRK" Dispatcher nor the freight crew involved) I would like to catch a main line freight having to drop out a bad-ordered car. It can be a lengthy process, and from what I heard worth to watch!!

Note this warning sign, now commonplace at most sidings and spurs, to warn conductors and brakies (brakemen) not to ride the side of cars account of a close clearance location

UH OH!!!!! You know what time it is, folks!!! It's......................TRAIN TIME!!! :-D (LOUD applause from the foamers!!! :-D)

This time bringin' the Thunder, CSX Q156, hot out of Chi-Town, and its load of double-stacks, lead today by yet another CW44AH 884, with C40-8 7515, and MASSIVE stacks!!!

The end of the stacker, as Q156 bids us a farewell, on its way to South Kearny, the tail splittin' the interlocking of CP 33

So far, I hope you have been enjoying the outing!! Up next, it is time for a TRAIN CHASE!!! :-D

Stay tuned, more to come!! :-)

Thank you, Mike!! :-)

Honest, much like you, I do have a love for signals, aspects, and how things work with them, and these old NYC searchlights, which in the past you yourself have done a remarkable job of catching before the "Hoods" replace them, are soon to be phased out as well, so why not get them before they are gone. Automatic 31 south of Haverstraw has already been replaced with a "Hood", and sad to say CP 33 is next.

Signals on the former NYC are probably not being replaced without cause. All these lines were re-signaled in the 1980's so there is no real savings in replacing anything unless there is a change to the physical plant or some sort of damage. Sill, its good to be on top of things.

All of the replacements I know of were the result of physical plant changes. Also you should refrain from calling them "homeballs". You work on a real railroad, not the NYC Subway. Oh, check out my Cumberland Road Trip, the photos are working again.

Nice pics + catch! Thanks for sharing those!

Looking at your posts made me look up pics of the River line, esp. West Haverstraw. Found this: Frank's Photography Site. Was it the station building that was big or the whole complex? Based on the pics, the station building seemed bigger, more solid than Haverstraw, but not impressively so (kind of like a 2 story brick house with a cellar).

Also this: River Sub Haverstraw2. Are there any more remnants of the original passenger car yard there, aside from what can be seen beyond the Stop sign in your pics?

It's too bad the route from Weehawken to Newburgh is long dead - it travels through some very scenic and tourist-worthy sites. But based on the old timetable, a 57-mile route took around 2 hours - maybe it could have done better if it was faster? ^_^;

Can you show that timetable you're talking about, and how many stops the train made?

For a modern comparison, NJT takes two hours to go from Hoboken to Hackettstown on trains that make almost all stops on the Montclair-Boonton.

I would not call a route that's still in operation, even for freight, "long dead". A route that has been abandoned for several years and had the tracks torn up might. NJT did have plans during the 90s to run trains from Hoboken to West Haverstraw, via the Meadowlands and Secaucus "Junction" station.

It was in the first link I posted, towards the bottom of the page. The person split the image into parts, so I'm going to link only to 2 parts of it:

Mon-Fri pt. 1
Mon-Fri pt. 2

I guess I'm spoiled by routes that seem to take the distance a lot quicker, but looking more closely at the Harlem line timetables, for instance, the times aren't that different for a local train. Still seems like the average speed is more of what I would expect of a subway train, but I guess it can't get much better without becoming impractical.

I did mean "long dead to passenger service". The idea may have been floated to restore service at least part way, but so much of the facilities for passenger service were stripped out or taken over by non-railroad entities so long ago, that I'm not going to hold my breath that they'll be coming back in the near future.

The team spurs north of where I stood are all that remains of the small yard that was once there. I believe there also used to be a siding there beyond that clearance sign (STOP/DISMOUNT) but the business there has since either stopped receiving cars or closed down. There is no remains whatsoever of the station, which has been said to have been a fairly sizable building, more so than Haverstraw.

I think by today's standard (accounting also for proper track maintenance) that time could easily be cut down, but if you look at the spacing between stations, and also account for dwell time in stations, dodging other passenger trains plus today's busy freight schedules on a railroad with largely single track with passing sidings, there actually might not be that big of a difference unless investment in extensive double tracking is undertaken.

Wow, 20 stops on a 34-mile route between Weehawken and West Haverstraw, not including Weehawken. That's an average speed of 23.72 mph. The ferry ride is scheduled for 14 minutes as well.

I did mean "long dead to passenger service". No, things aren't that bad on the River Sub. The main thing standing in the way is CSX's insistence that NJT not share tracks and instead build parallel tracks for passenger trains only. There's enough room to do that, but that'd make things ridiculously inefficient. There's also NJT's original plans to connect this track to what is now the Meadowlands spur, so that trains could go via Secaucus Junction.
