I am betwixt and between on this issue. On the one hand, It might be advantageous to have cell service in the subway, to report emergencies, or just to call ahead and let people know you're running late (especially when your "E" train suddenly becomes an "F" just south of 36th Street with no prior warning). But then again, you're also right in pointing out that people will have to suffer through the constant cell-phone chatter that's common on LIRR and MNRR.

On LIRR, they did wire the East River tunnels for cell service, so a person can get on a train in Penn station, and yak nonstop all the way to Ronkonkoma. Now, I have to say that being able to text and surf the Internet from my phone while underground is a great convenience. They are quiet, unobtrusive ways to pass the time, when I'm not standing at one of the ever-dwindling number of RFW's. :)

But just one thing: Ordering Chinese Food for pickup, from the train, is a convenience I refuse to give up!
