You could have the actual control mechanism in the center of the console and the respective controller handles positioned on both sides so that either handle could control the actual control package. The could be connected by a shaft inside the console with appropriate connections to the deadman's device. This way one control key could unlock the console an allow the T/O to switch hands at any time along the route. As for the deadman's device, the Boeing LRVs had a similar controller to the R-142s (and interestingly enough, on the operator' LEFT side) but instead of a twist device, the deadman's feature was a spring loaded arm that rose up on one side of the controller handle and had to be pressed down during operation. That type of deadman's feature might be more desirable than the current style.
