Fact is, the gestalt after WW II was not a deep desire to re-inhabit pre-war environs. A large percentage of the population wanted to leave the city behind. A large percentage of the population wanted to raise families in "country" settings. A large percentage of the population finally had the means to pursue these desires. A large percentage of the population done went and gone. The highways Moses built were not the causative factors in the preceeding events, much as some wish to believe so. I understand that wish, as it always makes it easier to grasp historical events if certain aspects of past events can be synopsised into compact labels. Just makes it easier to deal with. But as usual, true facts are much, much messier. Whatever Moses did was in response to what the people were clamoring for. |
