It was a nice station, but it closed because it was superfluous. Its heyday was before the construction of the deep tube lines, and before the imnternal combustion engine. In those days, it was difficult to travel from the City to the West End, so it was justfiable to run separate services from various residential areas to the City and the West End. The North London Raiway provided circuitous routes from many plales to Broad Street. In my lifetime it was always underused because those roundabout routes no longer made sense. Now, running the NLL through tubeless Hackney makes much better sense, and the Highbury & Islingtonn-Stratford stretch is the best-patronised part of the NLL. |
