Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Tue Jul 14 08:58:32 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for July 14 1928 from The Book of First Runs The 14th Street Eastern District Line is extended from Montrose Avenue to Broadway Junction connecting to the Canarsie Line. Prior to this opening Canarsie Line service had been provided by Broadway-Brooklyn Line trains at all times. The Canarsie Line would now be served by 14th Street trains at all times. Broadway-Bklyn service would be cut back to rush hours and middays. 1955 from The Book of Wrecks New Haven Railroad Train No. 172 The Federal derails on Jenkins Curve in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The train was en-route from Washington to Boston. Fifteen of the seventeen cars as well the engine, EP-4 363 left the tracks. Fifty eight passengers and crew were injured. There was one fatality, the engineer. The EP-4 was scrapped. Also damaged was an Alco RS-1 switcher 0949 was working in the yard next to the mainline. 1956 from The Book of Wrecks A fire broke out in the old Wanamaker Store at Astor Place at 11:55 PM. Over 600 firefighters and 50 pieces of equipment responded to the massive blaze which took 25 hours to bring under control. The water put on the fire flowed into the nearby subway stations at Astor Place on the IRT and 8 Street on the BMT. The roadbed on the southbound local track at Astor Place dropped four feet under the weight of a train. Service was also curtailed on the BMT until the 16th. Service on the IRT was not restored for six days. The Wanamaker Building was built in 1862 and was 14 stories tall. 1975 from The Book of First Runs The first train of Pullman-Standard R-46s operated today on the F Queens-6th Avenue-Culver Express. The consist was (S) 516-511-507-506,508-515-513-510. 1977 from The Book of Wrecks The last car of a Flatbush Avenue bound # 2 train derailed south of the Franklin Avenue Station at the point where the Nostrand Avenue Line branches off from the Eastern Parkway Line. The consist of the train was (s) 9203-2, 9087-6, 9073-2, 9052-3, 8885-4. R-33 8884 was badly damaged and was reportedly scrapped on the spot. Larry, RedbirdR33 |
