Unusual anachronism:The 1923 map indicates an elevated station at "Broadway" -- today's 74th-Broadway stop. But the street Broadway was not cut through from Northern Blvd. to Woodside Avenue in Elmhurst until several years later, I believe it was to facilitate construction of the IND subway. You can see on the 1924 aerial map that is is just open fields, with what looks like a dirt path or road crossing part of the area. The maps shows all the old street names along the line, was it already known back in 1923 (or 1917, when the IRT Corona line opened) that Broadway was eventually to be extended to Roosevelt Ave. at that point? |
