In 1954, the R10 could have been the only SMEE equipment serving Coney Island, and BoT/TA would have enjoyed shaming ex-BMT branches after the Culver "retake".

6th Avenue was getting new buildings, served iconic Rockefeller Center, and becoming a more desirable area than 8th Avenue. But 6th Avenue subway never saw post-war equipment until the R38/1966, while the adjacent BMT got the R27 full time on both locals in 1960.

All in all, it would have been better optics to put the R10 on the D.
