Your term “mechanical” is basically the same as my term “iron only” meaning that the physical coupling can take place but no electrical connections are possible. Keep in mind that I’m not just a railfan but a retired operating manager at NY’s MTA/NYCT so we had similar issues on the various NYCTS equipment where they could only physically couple but not have any electrical or in our case air connections. |
