Placing trains on suspension bridges might have been acceptable in the past, but I would not do that now - the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges would make very large targets for some terrorists to fly a hijacked aircraft into - and the resulting service disruptions would take decades to resolve. I am all in favor of removing the subways from those bridges and replacing them with tunnels - expensive, to be sure, but what else can be done ? |
