Re: Completion of Historic LIRR Double Track More Than a Year Ahead of Schedule

I was thinking not in terms of "diesel fleet shortage" but of extra equiptment, being it electric or push-pull, to provide the new service to Ronkonkoma in the event of an electric car shortage. Its not that unusual to have push-pull trains work in electric territory. Its also not unusual to have a new fleet of cars having a few "de-bugging" issues that could delay the entire fleet from being pressed into service.
I was around when the M-1s were introduced in the late 60s. They had enough break-in problems and shop inexperience issues that kept the long overdue scrapping of many of the MP 54s in service. The MP-54s were dying left & right , which resulted in daily cancellations of trains that sometimes resulted in the annulments of up to two dozen trains daily. Such was the bad old days.
