The high water table under Pitkin Ave, east of Euclid was the main reason why there was no tunnel built to connect to the Rockaways. A similar situation existed under the proposed Utica Ave tunnel, south of Kings Highway. Despite the, then, outcry over losing homes and buildings, the present portal from Grant Ave was deemed less expensive than a Pitkin tunnel. |
