I believe it was in the Miami area I would see "merge" printed on both the acceleration lane and the right-most through lane creating the idea that the onus was on both lanes to make sure there would be no conflict when a car in either lane passes the merge point at the end of the acceleration lane. It basically put an entering car and a through car on equal footing with regard to ROW at the merge point.

I can't say whether that's a safer way to do it, or whether people were listening to it (as I wasn't behind the wheel while down there). I also forget if they put a solid white line down to set the right most through lane apart from the other lanes to the left to avoid other interference with the merge.
