People who believe in such regional systems are entirely caught up in moving equipment all over the place, and not concerned with people's trips. If some poor schmuck want to go from Metuchen to Mineola, they can transfer at NYPS and do it now. There is also no guarantee that a LIRR system with 10 branches and an NJT with 7 major lines, producing 70 route permutations, that the few selected would satisfy any such person's itinerary. They wil stil wind up doign exactly what they do now - transfer enroute, if not at NYPS, then at Newark Broad, Newark Penn, Secaucus, NYPS, Jamaica, Babylon, or Hicksville. There is no reason to spend billions re-engineer all the systems to be compatible and wreak havoc on service planning to make it work, and it won't work. SEPTA is a daily rolling disaster, lucky to have OTP on any route exceed 90%, after 35 years of practice to pacify Professor Vuchic's incessant whining. |
