Tha was because of the Manhattan centric mentality of what passed for TA management at the time. The BMT was unique in that its route names were used whether the trains operated via Bway or Nassau St un like the iND which used different letters to describe specific branch to trunk line combinations. In addition, the decision with the R-32s and 38s was based on the theory that the IRT and IND divisions had only the Manhattan trunk lines on their route signs and not the branch line, so why should the BMT include the branch names. The cesspool of incompetence that passed and continues to pass for TA management and planning totally ignored the fact that unlike the other two divisions, the BMT had almost all its Southern Division branches going to a common terminal, Coney Island. By the time the planners realized what they should have already known it was too late to make any changes so the TA posted signs at principal BMT stations informing passengers to “Know trains at a glance.” In addition to that particular faux pas, the TA for some reason included a “C/8 Ave Exp” on the roll sign, a service which AFAIK would not be operated in the near future, but neglected to include a “B/6 Ave Exp” which was planned to be operated. Actually, at the time when single letters meant exp and double letters meant lcl, the roll signs should have contained single and double letter signs for ALL routes. The so called planners also ignored the existence of the 4Av Bankers special which should have had signs for “R/4 Ave Exp” and the Brighton Bankers' special which should have had “Q/Brighton Exp.” The Eastern Div signs were another gross mistake as they described the 3 Bway Bkln routes as Nassau St even though 2 of them never actually ran on Nassau St at all but only operated under Centre St as far as Chambers St.
