Since the motor control systems of the Hi-Vs were 600V, the full 600V 3rd rail current had to be carried from car to car by bus jumpers which would mean that a train of Hi-Vs going from a live section to a dead one would energize the dead section until the entire train had passed into the dead section breaking the transmission from the live section. Lo-Vs only had 32V battery current going from car to car so there was no danger of transmitting live power to a dead section.
