I remember riding on the Pelham Line around 1960 and there was an R-22 in the consist of one of the trains passing in the opposite direction, but that was very rare. One of the interesting things about Pelham is that it didn’t run any R-12s, 14s, or 15s in any of the consists even though those car types were common on the other IRT lines ( except for Flushing of course). From what I saw, the entire complement of R-36 ML cars were assigned to Pelham and it seemed that the only single cars on Pelham were the R-17s. In the late 1970s, the TA experimented with operating 5 car trains out of both Pelham and Parkchester during the mid day and the Yd/Mast at Westchester Yd had to make sure that sufficient trains were assembled so that they could be cut 5 X 5 for the midday operation.
