R-17? Guess it was a real 6. Of course, the 6 didn't use R-21s or R-22s in real life in 1974 (or possibly ever).

By 1974, it was kinda rare to see a 17 as a lead motor. Usually, they would be cars 3/4 (or 8/9). They used to run them lead in the late 60s/early 70s (lots of photographic proff on nycsubway.org). In fact, I've seen pics of a 17 in the lead, then a married (or semi-married) pair, then another 17. Strange. Usually 5/6 were always a married pair (I wonder if the absence of the controller/brake stand gave the C/R a bit more room).
