Here is a paper about a case where acupuncture WAS used as the sole method of anesthesia in surgery: ACUPUNCTURE AS SURGICAL ANESTHESIA: A CASE OF INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE TREATING BREAST CANCER SEQUELAE

It has also been used in open-heart surgery, in conjunction with reduced amounts of normal anesthesia: Acupuncture anesthesia for open heart surgery in contemporary China. I'm not sure if it was ever used as the sole anesthesia for open-heart surgery.
