Gear Down, Flaps 15, Speed, Landing Check

Posted by cortelyounext on Sun Aug 12 17:37:18 2012

I got back yesterday from 2 months in Houston and somehow I made it through Schoolcar. Along with my military and Airbus training, it was the most difficult thing I have ever done in my life per se. Anyway, I'll be flying United Airlines 737 NGs (700s, 800s, 900s, and 900ERs along with the occasional Classic 500s until those pieces of equipment go away next year) out of Newark.
FWIW, my first (revenue) passenger flight is August 17 and I'm being thrown into the fire. The itinerary which means schedule is Newark to Boston to Newark to Boston to Newark. I know many of you reside in the New York area so on the off chance you will be at EWR this coming Friday during the pertinent times please stop by and say hi. Here are the respective flight numbers per se:

Flight #1686, #1249, #1198, #1065

The next day I work Flight #1554 from Newark to San Diego where at least I'll have a decent layover - I'm still dragging from Houston. I'll be flying early and often the rest of August and I'll end the month on Flight #1554 which is the dreaded "RedEye" (SFO - EWR) arriving in Newark around 0800. No rest for the weary but it is good to be home. Until next time y'all take care.

Here is one last update for the many ones of you who actually care. I successfully completed the IOE Phase II evaluation last week whereby you fly passengers on scheduled flights with an experienced Captain who is also a Line Check Airman (LCA). With that behind me en loco parentis, I just finished my first trip (4 day) as a regular pilot this morning. Early Sunday morning, I flew DCA to SFO arriving at 1130. That same evening, after walking along the bay and grabbing a bite to eat and attempting to sleep in the afternoon, I worked the "RedEye" from SFO to EWR which arrived this morning at 0800. Now that was tough. To better illustrate my point, here is the painting Early Sunday Morning by Edward Hopper, and thanks again.

Congrats. Either of those flights on the 739ER? (I am curious, as that is the only 737 variant that Continental United Continental Holdings, LLC flies that I haven't been on. (I've flown every 737 model except the -100 (which I think CO flew a million years ago), -600 (which no one really flies, never flown by a US airline) and the -900. (my only chance is UA or AS, wonder if AS still has that one LAX-SFO/SFO-LAX flight that they had in the late 90s. It was actually < Mexico >-LAX-SFO- < PDX or SEA >)

Just the last scene?

The title of the original movie is in the header: "Zero Hour!" (including exclamation mark) The main character's name is Ted Stryker (in Airplane!, it's spelled "Striker"), played by Dana Andrews. The screenplay is by Arthur Hailey, the same guy who wrote all the "Airport" books; not sure if ZAZ gave him direct credit.

I'm trying to bid off these things in part because of the aerodynamically unsound wing design. I heard from someone not important who that leading edge devices are necessary to offset the ridiculous wing design where the end of the wings are de facto bent up for some reason.
