Let's see how this all works out. It can't help reduce the number of shootings in NYC.

The Fourth Amendment is a personal favorite.

The sad part is that stop and frisk is probably the best tool to use to prevent murders as it's basically the easiest way of searching for illegal guns. In effect, knowing that the cops are going to harass the shit out of you in order to look for guns is probably the best way to scare sensible young men out of having one in the first place. Otherwise, there isn't much that we can do to prevent young men from running around with guns illegally and then using them like idiots when they get into arguments with each other.

Mind you, I'm conflicted about this as I'm in the target demographic to be searched, while having family members who live in the neighbourhoods with high murder rates.

It's an excellent tool and part of the reason NYC isn't like Chicago, DC, or some other shoot 'em up city.

Politicians and community leaders would rather have more shootings and say they have their freedom, than let cops target people who look like they might be trouble.

NYC will have more shootings and murders by next year at this time. Bloomberg and Kelly have given up. Welcome back to the 1970s and 80s! The tragic joke will be on the libs in places like Williamsburg, Park Slope and Fort Greene whose neighborhoods will be swarmed by armed criminals from nearby ghetto sections.

Crime way up after stop-&-frisk drop

By REBECCA HARSHBARGER and DAVID SEIFMAN

August 4, 2012

Major crimes spiked by more than 12 percent after the number of stop-and-frisks conducted by the NYPD dropped dramatically earlier this year, The Post has learned.

Figures show there were 24,751 major crimes committed between Jan. 1 and March 31, a period when cops stopped 203,500 individuals and recovered 881 guns, according to sources.

In the following three months — between April 1 and June 30 — the number of stop-and-frisks cops conducted fell to 133,934 and the crime figures shot up to 27,832. The number of guns seized fell to 732.

There was no further analysis of the crime data immediately available.

But on the face of it, the statistics seem to provide the NYPD with evidence that — at least in this one period — more stop-and-frisks resulted in fewer crimes and more gun seizures.

The relationship between the latest stop-and-frisk numbers and crime statistics could provide critical ammunition in the battle over the policing tactic, which has come under fire from activists like the New York Civil Liberties Union and a chorus of elected officials.

Mayor Bloomberg has steadfastly defended the program as a life-saver and slammed the NYCLU for pushing to dismantle it.

“If the NYCLU is allowed to determine policing strategies in our city, many more children will grow up fatherless and many more children will not grow up at all,” he said last month at a Queens church.

“Let’s be clear. The NYCLU’s priority is not protecting our safety, it is protecting their ideology. And in that regard, they are no better than the NRA.”

Unrelenting critics of the controversial practice kept piling it on yesterday, even after Police Commissioner Ray Kelly confirmed that 34 percent fewer people were stopped in the latest period measured.

“It is encouraging to see the numbers begin to come back to Earth,” declared Public Advocate Bill de Blasio.

“But we need to look beyond this one statistic to know if City Hall has truly heeded the voice of communities across the five boroughs. Reform does not end here.”

The message was virtually the same from the NYCLU, which called the latest stop-and-frisk numbers “encouraging” before unleashing another attack.

“If past is prologue, we can expect that NYPD officers subjected at least 1,000 innocent New Yorkers a day to humiliating and unjustified street stops,” said NYCLU executive director Donna Lieberman.

“That is nothing to brag about. This reduction is a good start, but much more needs to be done to rebuild community trust.”

Critics had been demanding that the NYPD bring down the numbers, which is just what it did in rather dramatic fashion.

If the lower pace achieved from April to June continues through the remainder of the year, it will be only the second time during the Bloomberg administration that year-to-year figures would show a decline. The last time that happened was in 2007, when there were 472,096 stop-and-frisks, compared to 506,491 in 2006.

About half of those stopped get patted down.

Kelly attributed the latest reduction to two developments first spotlighted by The Post: restoring about half the 2,000 rookie cops to precincts who had flooded high-crime neighborhoods early in the year and new training.

“We are now training more specialized units in a more focused way of conducting stop and questions and sometimes frisk practices,” he said. “We are hopeful that the training is improving the quality of stops.”

Well just as a matter of fact, in 2008, the murder rate in LA was 9.6 per 100,000 population. It's dropped .8% since then. In NY in 2007, the murder rate was 6.3 per 100,000 and has dropped every year since. So perhaps in LA had adopted the NY method of "Stop & Frisk", LA might be as safe as New York. Just a thought.

We can all be smart-asses here, myself included, but another Dinkins-like crime wave will finish off NYC as a city and as a business center. We will show the rest of the country that the natural state of cities is mayhem and violence. The damage will be irreparable this time.

It will start with car break-ins and nighttime armed robberies. Then shootings will increase, followed by an increase in daylight armed robberies and burglaries. Subway crime will also increase. That's what happened in the Dinkins era. Except that there is no crime-fighter like Giuliani in the 2013 mayoral race this time.

There was no Dinkins crime wave. NYC was dealing with the same problems as every major city back in the 90's. DC, Chicago, LA, Atlanta, etc were all terrible in the 90's. Crime has gone down nearly everywhere since then, with Chicago being an obvious exception.

Both I guess. Where I live we have the LA Sheriff, but we border the LAPD on the south and west. The areas patrolled by both police forces have had drastic drops in crime over the last decade. I think that a huge part of it is that gangs have been disappearing. LA city and the communities that surround it probably only have 30% of the gang members that we had back in the 90's and even lots of them are in their 30's and 40's now.

Admittedly, that's the problem as the vast majority of people who are stopped and frisked tend to look more like Easy and less like you. So to you, it's a minor inconvenience, but to somebody who lives within those neighbourhoods and has been frisked multiple times, or knows people who has been frisked, it comes across as a perverse personal insult even if the cops are relatively polite about the process. It will always been seen as a racial issue, and never has a safety and crime prevention issue from the perspective of those most likely to be frisked.

by the way - not to put too fine a point on it but your assumption is bullshit. The crown heights riots did not happen because of a lack of funds. There was not a lack of police presence at the riots because of a lack of police funds. The police were told not to take any action - order given tot he police commissioner by out then Law & Order mayor, David dinkins. So you can stop your bullshit once again.

In some cases the gang members may have moved, but in other places the demographics are very similar and gang violence is way down. Admittedly the downturn has coincided with a significant decrease in black population in Watts, Compton, and South LA and in general the most violent areas of the city remain those with the highest black populations.

There weren't enough cops throughout the city BECAUSE of lack of funds. Stop trying to distort everything to suit your politics. And in that link I just posted, there was an explanation of WHY Dinkins did NOT refuse to send police, he was telling them to try their best not to escalate things further:

So show us that party you were talking about. Were there dancers?

You are free to believe or not believe. I've made the statement before and no one has ever proven me wrong. Perhaps I have specific knowledge that you don't.
